TD5 chugs when cold
Engine starts on the button no problem, however it chugs and almost seems like its running on 4 cylinders when cold. After 10 mins of driving it seems fine and runs really well. It is just when you first drive off it seems to chug up the road. No black smoke or anything. I have ordered an EGR blanking kit to see if this will help it run a bit smoother until it warms up.

Does ambient temperature make any difference to the chugging on start up? As in when its hot outside does the chugging go away? Sounds like, perhaps, it might be worth investigating if your glow plugs may be dodgey?

Take it to diagnostics (Nanocom) and look for fault like injector open circuit - your description looks like a bad contact somewhere between engine ecu and injectors.
TD5 runs nice without working glow plugs, with only some of them working, the engine run can be v bit harsh, but only for very shot time, 10 mins is long time. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Thanks for the replies. It is probably less than 10mins that it is chugging. It probably warms up after maybe 3-4.

The ambient temperature doesnt affect the chugging. It does it in hot or cold weather.

I had similar problem - engine was running fine when cold, but after 15 mins one injector hesitate to work. Problem was clearly visible with Nanocom - there were fault codes. Repair was simple - remove the injector loom, press a bit the connector pins, replace with new Orings. After 6 year still running fine, and no more oil in loom thanks to new Orings.
Later I have repaired the same problem on another cars.
No need for nee loom, some aftermarket loom were bad when they were new.
So first diagnostics, them mechanical work.
Another problem I have seen was sticking valve, because of bad hydraulic lifter. But it was noisy. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Exactly the same fault here, seemingly running on four cylinders.

New injector harness cured it.

Mines always a bit meh.. until it's been on turbo boost. It's almost like the turbo bearings are a bit dry or tight until it's spooled up.

I know that's a bad description. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)
