Military Wolf Bumpers
Hi,

Anyone know where I can get a good quality Military bumper?

I have seen a few for sale but can't seem to find out whether they are 'heavy duty' or cheap copies.

I spoke to John Craddocks today, but they had know idea what the ones they were selling were like??

hi steve,
i've had 4 military bumpers on various vehicles in the past and the best one was the newly galvanised version that can be seen in my gallery on my 300tdi. That was £80 from craddocks via their ebay shop.


the worst was a "heavy duty military style bumper" that the powder coat finish came off far to quickly. it was a similar cost.

i'm not sure if there are any differences between a normal military bumper and a wolf version, so if you can find a normal (early 90/110) ex military bumper that is already galvanised then that could be a very good option - i have seen these for about £45 + £10 for the towing pin, at various 4x4 shows

Do you want it for recovery?

Reason I ask is that the 'Heavy duty'ness of the bumper is rubbish.

The bumper is used for recovery on road (straight bar) and for the old style recovery (Beddy sh!te). All military Land Rovers are equipped with jate rings for proper recovery- I have seen quite a few arrow shaped bumpers where people have tried a recovery on the bumper Rolling Eyes .

Apologies for the thread resurrection...

I use the front hitch to maneuver my Sankey into the tight spot where it lives whilst not in use. The hitch is rather prominent so I was wondering whether the military version of the bumper with the pin is able to accept the NATO lunette?

Have a look on ebay using RRC3508 (genuine LR part)

I bought one (mine was galvanized and I painted it black). It's very sturdy, uses a 1" pin.

Can send pics of mine if you want them

It may not be as sturdy as some aftermarket bumpers, but it's one hell of a lot better than the thin/light rust-trap bumper that came on the Defender as standard Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Some forums have stated that they're not strong enough for pushing - that would be my need if anyone can confirm whether the NATO ring/lunette will fit into the receptacle. But I'd only be pushing a 3/4 tonne Sankey:

The NATO ring is even across the board on size as far as I am aware, it is designed to fit the military straight bar for recovery so I can’t see any issues with the trailer, I’m sure I have shunted trailers with them before.

I have shunted a 4 ton ballast roller with the type of ring hitch shown below in the piccy with the Wolf / MOD bumper. The Ag type pick up hitch / ring hitch is though slightly less in diameter than the Sankey type. It handles it fine as long as you show it some mechanical sympathy and don’t shock load it

The proper Wolf bumper is reinforced and fully enclosed along the rear of the centre section of the bumper.

I looked at this and found that the only way it can work is to insert the pin from underneath and put the lynch pin in at the top. It's probably ok but not ideal, so I've gone off the idea of fitting one to mine. Darren

Thanks Darren. I feared that might be the case. Not ideal when you've got a Sankey in one hand and you're trying to insert the pin from below and lynch pin it with the other! Sad

Why is that ? Is it due to the Aircon grill snout ? If you have a jack on the Sankey you don’t need to support it with one hand - leaving both free to put the pin in Thumbs Up
