Galvanising original side steps
Hi All,

I’ve recently taken my side steps off as the paint had started to bubble around the welds and lift on the corners.

I’ve cleaned up the welds and the rust was superficial, so I’m considering getting the side bars and supporting brackets shotblasted and hot dipped galvanised.

The cost to do the work is approx £200, so before I go ahead is this a waste of money? Are they likely to rust from the inside out?

Replacement bars can be picked up for not much more, but I’m guessing they may rust even quicker than the originals.

Let me know what you think.

Is that for other parts cost wise or just for the steps? If the latter it sounds expensive!

You wouldn't get rust inside with hot dip Galv, but you would need all cappings and accessories removed and possibly drill drain holes to aid the dipping process and avoid gassaeous explosions at the plant.
(They normally advise.)

I was seriously interested in Wedge Galvanizing as a company but never got around to it as of yet. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

the molten zinc will run inside the tubes, but you might have to drill a few more holes to let the zinc in and the air out.

Are the holes at the end not big enough?

👍🏻 ZSD-Puma has it wrapped up really. It’s just to ensure there is no internal section that cannot release air and of course to allow molten Zinc in. As well as the explosive side.
They also do degreasing dipping etc and all that sort of thing. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

£200 seems a bit over the top, I paid around €70 for sandblasting and galvanizing mine (Puma 90) two years ago:

After galvanizing they got an U-Pol Raptor coat.

What did you use to receive attach the treads? I couldn't find a supplier of the long rivets to replace the originals and had limited success with riv nuts. Current Steeds:

If I remember correctly they were like 6,4mm x 20mm (similar to these but aluminium). My local landy garage fixed them because my one hand rivet gun can't handle rivets larger than 5mm.

£200 seems very expensive. It wasn't blasted (I attacked it with a wire wheel) but I had some sliders I repaired for a friend galvanised for him. Each weighted in at 38kg and cost under £30 to hot dip galvanise. Ed

I was looking at new steps as I'm fed up having to keep painting them...

I started sanding them down to paint before holidays and a hole appeared... eeek. so On my return it will be new step time.

£200 sounds a lot?

Standard new steps are around £235 for a 110 XS

Then a Zinc plated option for £330

Interestingly though the guarantee is a year for both? My plan is to go for either of these as I also would like a black tread plate like the fire & ice style. Then also fit front mudflaps to stop the crud catching and baking in on the steps rotting them.

For now I've painted mine again even with the hole Smile
