You really need a multimeter on the battery to check the voltage going back into it. Whilst running it should be around 13.5- 14.5v
If it is at least you know its charging and you can rule out the alternator ![]() |

Should have said the two volt meters main and aux batteries both drop towards 12.xV. Weird thing is after leaving the car for an hour or so and then drove off the battery stayed off but then after about 10mins the light came back on. 1999 Defender TD5 110

You could check fuse 6 on the bulkhead (10A) just in case as i believe that feeds the alternator. As it an intermittent issue though i cant see it being the fuse sadly. I think that fuse also does the reverse lights.

On the Wolf I had an intermittent charge warning light, turned out to be the alternator was only giving out 24ish volt on tick over and 25/26v on higher revs not 28v, (wolfs run a 24v set up not 12v like the civilian wagons) so it could keep the wagon running happily and on a normal run recharged the batteries fine, I think I ran it for a few months before tracking down a new alternator, admittedly it’s a simpler engine with no Engine ecu constantly drawing power. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

I think I have found the issue. On measuring the battery voltage I noticed the relay for the split charge was clicking in and out and the engine tone was altering.
Unplugged the feed that detects 12v and the relay stopped clicking in and out. Tomorrow i will head out for a drive and see what gives. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

I think the clicking relay is not the cause of the problem, but the consequence of the voltage just going around the value at which the relay activates, (i.e. a to low voltage) due to either a faulty battery or faulty alternator.
Did you measure the voltage at the alternator output while revving at approx 2000-2200 rpm? By experience I know that you can drive about 200 km on a good battery without using lights but while pulling a trailer. The first thing that stops is the rev counter followed quickly by the speedometer. On that moment you can not restart the engine if you need to.
![]() I am afraid it will be the altenator probably the brushes. You might be lucky if just one is a little stuck. I never tried but you might be able to get the rear cover off and free the brushes with the altenator in place. Getting the altenator out is a job on it;s own. I will try tomorrow holding the revs to see what results i get. I measure at idle before. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

After unplugging the relay switch feed for the split charge relay and then doing a 1hr trip all was good, no battery warning lights. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Checked voltage and all good. Drive home of 300 miles produced no battery warning light, volt meter stayed at normal position during the drive. All this with the split charge relay feed unplugged. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Dead aux battery?
Voltage in your meter goes up to 14 with engine running after showing 12v with ign on? Likewise I don't believe the car is the problem. Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

14v or thereabouts. 12v and bit with ignition on, but engine not running
Suspecting either a dying battery or knackered relay. The main thing I was running off the aux batteries was a Engel fridge, but the car engine was running at the time. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

My aux will run my Engel in UK for 4 days no recharge.
IS the aux always fitted? Or left uncharged for prolonged periods? Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Those reading are off main bat only?
Reconnect relay see if fault returns Drop test aux What's aux Voltage a day after being charged? hard wire aux to main see what happens, this could drain main bat! How old is aux. Whose setup is it? Vsr is What brand? Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |
