United Kingdom 2011 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Aintree Green
Diff plugs
Hi all,

Longer time lurker, first time poster. I’ve got a 2011 2.4 90.

I’ve had a pinion seal leak on my rear diff since I bought the vehicle two months (2,500 miles).

I stopped at the motorway services last week, when I felt the rear diff and it was red hot; worried that the oil had run too low and with no way of checking, I decided to change the oil in the rear diff.

Anyway, when I took the plugs out, the threads were covered in green / blue sludge. Does anyone know what this is? Should I have just changed these anyway?

Stu

Doh! Should have probably guessed that!

Do you change them everytime you do the oil?

I’m getting the pinion seal changed by Steve Hill in Bristol next month; maybe I’ll ask him to change them then.

Also, is it ‘normal’ for the rear diff to get that hot cruising at 65mph unloaded on the motorway?

I've never had to put sealant on the diff plugs on any of my landies - I believe they are taper thread so shouldn't need it - Unless someone has damaged the threads previously or fitted the wrong plugs.

I'd change them to get rid of the rubbish that's on them and they should last you many many uses. I've never changed a plug either!

As for the diff getting hot, can't say I've ever felt it but it always amazes me how hot the transfer box gets so it wouldn't surprise me. Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon

yes it gets hot .more so if its low on oil or got the wrong oil in it.

it may well be the seal or even the flange that's worn.

heres one of mine both hand brake and the diff end where leaking

I its blue/green its probably Hylomar, you shouldn't need it on a Defender, but some of the other Land Rover products specify it for diff plugs, front diff on the L322 for example.

The rear diff pinion seal is prone to getting dirt and crap in it. Nige at Xcess4x4 has designed a "Superflange" that protects the pinion seal. The rear part of the flange is flared to sit over the seal with a small gap (by small we're talking thou here) and therefore protect it.

Now obviously not everyone sets up the pinion as fastidiously as Nige so although we'll within spec not all pinions have the same height so he's also got a load of precision washers that are used to space it out. Note if you need the shims it's not that the pinion is set up wrong, it's just LR tolerances...

Thought I had a better picture of one but you can just about make it out in the photo below. Note the revolutionary new form of diff guard. Long lead time on those and not cheap unfortunately. I sold the last batch for £850 each Laughing
