Netherlands 2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 CSW Stornoway Grey
Inner seal rear axle
Last monday i was repairing/replacing the inner seal of the rear axle.

On the left (with grey ring inside) is the new one. On the right is the old one (without grey ring).

So my question is. Should it be installed with the gray ring Or without?

Might help if you say what year/axle the car is/has and what part number the seal is?

I would imagine with, I would have thought it may be a superseded part improved as the ring will help the seal retain its shape.
Especially as you can see an outer and inner mating face, with the grey ring sandwiched between the two.

Many seals are notorious for going oval or going out of true, then the inevitable happens.

That would be my view on it at least. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R
