I have found the large Tomtom the best for me and my wife likes it so much she's nicked it because she does not like the built in one ,so I now have a Garmin in the 90 not so easy to use but free from my son who needs the latest bit of kit,I'm with you on ditching the tires of the modern world

I've had a Garmin for the last 5 years and it's been great! It occasionally has hiccups, (doesn't like the tall buildings in the centre of London) but generally is brilliant. I've been in several cars with built in sat nav and the Garmin beats them hands down. James

I've also had a Garmin for about 6 years and works just as well as my built in one in the Discovery Sport. Defender 90XS SW

Here we go, obtuse answer, but this never breaks down, the battery never dies, the wife and son never steal it, it’s not affected by tall buildings etc etc. It’s only weakness is user input, otherwise a fairly faultless bit of kit.

Garmin for Europe but have generally found them a pain in the arse to update so now I tend to use my phone with Apple Carplay.
one suggestion though is if you are getting a new sat nav, why not get one with a dash cam built into it then you can kill two birds with one stone. Regards Barbara |

I've had sat navs since the early days of them and having a job that required driving around London - thankfully something I no longer have to do!
They've come on in leaps and bounds and you need to think what you want from it. If you are just happy with a standalone unit then almost any one will do as long as they cover the area you want. For us, I wanted a sat nav that acted as a dashcam, reversing camera, coped with us towing the caravan and also confirms the correct speed limit when towing, taking local laws into consideration. So I bought a Avtex Tourer One Plus, which is actually a rebadged Garmin Dezlcam model, but without the HGV-specific functions and instead it has a few caravan and motorhome features. It also has a speed camera database but to be honest I turned that off because I got fed up of the constant warnings. It updates via the usual Garmin Express software as normal. You can set that up so it knows what sort of trailer you are towing, including weight, height and width and won't route down unsuitable roads. It also sets the correct speed limit for whatever combination you are driving. So far it's been pretty good and the combination of features is perfect for us. One set up properly it shows the correct speed limit for towing e.g. 50mph on A roads, 80kph on similar French roads, 60mph on motorways - 90kmh on autoroutes. Downside - expensive.... Been happy with the TomTom unit I have. The live traffic feature with rerouting I like. Did not probably save me lots of time but did make my journey home from Penrith on Sunday more free flowing. As it diverted me onto minor roads from the M6 at Sandbach. So I kept moving on what was a hot sunny day.
The traffic cam notice is a bit annoying but the average speed calculation while in roadworks is nice feature. I would buy a motorhome or lorry version next time as planning speeds are not best suited to a Defender. While it plans you will do 40mph on national speed limit roads it expects you will do an average 70mph on the motorway. Setting this to 60mph would give a more accurate way of how my Defender drives. Mapping has seemed good and very detailed. It is important to do the updates at least once a month to get good roadwork and map change info. If buying new I would look at dashcam and reversing options though I have these with other equipment now. 1995 Defender 110 CSW 1971 SIIA Lightweight |

I always had Tomtoms but my last one I had stopped updating after my company car arrived with a Tomtom derived Sat Nav system. I lost my job (and the car) so was in need of one again. Wife bought me a Garmin which I was sceptical of. To be honest, it’s quite good. It needs a smartphone for traffic data (the Tomtom had a built in Sim). I think it is simpler than the Tomtom. Never had an issue updating it (it has life time maps and cameras) whereas I had nothing but heartache updating the Tomtom (I have been told they have a better system now).
My only whinge, I used to update my Tomtom with a silent voice so all I received were warning sounds from the device (no directions). The Garmin is either both directions and warnings or all silent. Small issue. It also depends on what model you purchase as to the bells and whistles. I know some Renaults (and others)have issues with the windscreen coatings which play havoc with internal Sat Navs of all makes. Not an issue with a Defender but worth checking if you intend to use on another vehicle. |

One thing to be aware of with TomTom most of them are sold with lifetime map and speed cameras updates (the speed camera warning beeps are a nuisance). However, the term lifetime is rather misleading as the free updates are only valid while TomTom supports your model which at present for new units is about three to five years so not really lifetime. Garmin Nüvi 750 with lifetime maps updates. Solihull installed standard equipment on the SVX with a fantastic mount and dedicated behind the dash speaker. At 10 years still looks great, works a treat and gets me anywhere in Europe.

Garmin gets my vote, I still have a Nuvi something but maps are out of date and annoying that it doesn't have direct wifi update.
