Synchro or clutch?
Hi folks, I'm a newby here having got my first Defender ('97 300TDI County 90 SW) last year. Prior to that I have had 2 Discoveries but there really is no comparison. Apart from my wife and dog my Defender is the love of my life! - I have to say that in case either ever read this thread.
I would appreciate some help and advice on the following: When changing gear I get a graunch as if the synchro is worn.If I slow the gear change and change at lower revs then it doesn't occur. So is it likely to be the gearbox or just the clutch?

Thanks in advance for any help.

It could be either really. If the clutch isn't fully disengaging it can have the same symptoms. Have you checked all the air is bled out of it?

I rebuilt mine, and i only have that same problem between 2-3 gear change, you may just need to adjust the spring return on the gear shifter.

If you have a climb in rpm above 2500rpm and no increase in speed, then you have a bad clutch.

To check the slave in a parked position find the engaging point, where the clutch grabs, if its about the half way point you are fine.

Is it any particular gear change? Mine's makes a little crunch from 2nd - 3rd. I find moving 2nd - neutral position - slight pressure towards 4th before moving into 3rd helps

Sounds arduous but really isn't!

Not saying this is the cure and will still need sorting but it will reduce further wear

that sounds like what i have, I am goin to try and adjust the shifter springs to see if that cures my issue.

I am waitin on the repair of my ECU before i may try.

Thank you for the advice. I'll bleed the slave cylinder and adjust the spring return... if that doesn't work itstarts to look expensive!
