It always pays to shop around
I have recently decided to fit a steering guard and the one I fancied was on an LRI advert e but I thought at £202.40 it was expensive compared to some of the other makes. I then noticed that stamped on the guard was the initials FD Flat Dog I thought so I went and had a look at their site and found the same thing for £156.00 with free postage. That is a saving of £46.00 that's quite a saving. ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

Bought mine from Flat Dog some three years ago. Good value, extremely well made and fitted easily without any issues.

Just an adage ordered the guard from Flat Dog at one this afternoon and just received an email saying the item has been processed and sent out for delivery and I should receive it tomorrow. Now that what I call good service

Looks well. I could actually justify a purchase. I once set off having forgot there was a excavator bucket in front of the Defender - the bucket remained unscathed

I remember at last years LRO they had a pair of heated, vinyl Corbeau RRS with runners/frames.
£1700. yes £1700. Mine where £1330 on finance... I think they where hoping to sell em to some unlucky sod that couldnt be bothered to check online. |

I've bought a lot of 'stuff' off Flat Dog over the years - always great service and if you phone them up you can sometimes twist their arm for a little more of a discount......

Really? Do you actually know their mark up? We have just ordered some gear and we are talking about thousands of pounds worth of gear. Our trade discount is less then 15%. Now only a slight issue in this case. We have paid up front and they will now put them into production which might take a few weeks, i.e. we are expected to be a free bank loan. Now social media people expect that nasty word discount. So we are in business to make money but we have rent/rates/insurance etc to pay and try to make a profit. Now many people have a mistaken idea of how business works and the actual expenses incurred by businesses. We have had people on various forums tell us that our profit margins on goods are 75% of actual retail price. I wish and our accountant would wet himself if it was! Now before you ask a trader for discount what would YOU say if your employer was going to discount (i.e. reduce) your wage by 10-20%? Brendan |

Same in my business. No discounts for any other payments except for high value. And rarely at that, when I have given one I haven’t even been thanked. Margins are that tight I have understanding when deals cannot be sought, especially on people’s living. Discounts normally apply at only certain times a year normally 5 or 10% only for a temp time.
You’ll be lucky to get £4 off a multi million pound business for an order worth over £100 TheThunder Rolls🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Working for Harley Davidson back in the day, the usual mark up was 48%.
Alot depends on the brand and the ' exclusiveness ' ( is that a word!? ) of the product they are selling. Harley Davidson are a global brand with a core following whose motorcycles are up there with the likes of Ducati etc as a brand leader and their prices reflect that.. The goods themselves aren't all that, some of their stuff is damn right diabolical, but it's irrelevant, the brand sells and sells at a higher price. Defender stuff is doing the same...on the back of the ' exclusivness ' ( that word again! ) that they are no longer made and that items for this model are now worth 2, 3 or more times what they used to be creates a market of sellers who feel they can charge what they like, so the mark ups can be increased ...that's just natural greed from the seller. The flip side is that also companies are now holding onto stock they may, or may not, sell as the market for Defenders will decline...again this can increase the price as holding stock doesn't pay the bills... Just my 2 pence |

Firstly, can I just say I appreciate people have to make a living, I’ve been down the self-employed route and been used as free labour to the extent that I’m still owed about a good Td5 90’s worth of cash... However, I agree with Zed here. Even if the eBay seller is buying from Flat Dog as a standard consumer at £156 a time, adding nearly £40 for the privilege of them sending it to you with their shipping notice rather than FD’s is downright cheeky. What possible value do they add for that money? If it’s posted they aren’t fitting for free either! |
