oil pressure issues + servicing Oil pump
Hi.

2003 td5 crewcab nearing 190 000. owned since march 2017

engine rebuilt locally by PO at a LR specialist. timing chain not renewed so i am guessing oil pump not replaced. engine remapped to 150bhp and vnt turbo installed at the time

Engine oil Texaco 5w30 and genuine filters done July 2017 myself (unused between august 2017 and Jan 2018)

I start over when engine check light and heater light come off. Oil light comes off quickly after start. I am not the "Drive it like you stole it type" After morning starts i drive it peacefully with turbo rarely spooling in to let it warm up. and due to the nature of our roads i never have it running at full RPM. Drive is mostly relaxed.

last week i finished installing a TIM electric oil pressure gauge.

>> Cold idle (9 to 10C temp outside) pressure is about 35psi (book says 43.5psi)

>>On the drive (temp gauge reads half way up) pressure is about 20psi but at times is 15psi. (book says 21psi up to 43.5 psi at 3500)

>> warm idle(after a day of driving - city driving) presure drops to 1 or 3psi. The Specialist who did the rebuilt did some work on a friend's td5 and used to warn him not to let the td5 idle for too long. is this because they are known to have low idle pressures when hot?

>> What sort of road speed/gear selection equate to 3500ish rpm?
>> Should i drop sump and change pump's pressure relief valve? Do i need to remove front cover to work on pump?
>> Since the maltese summers tend to be hot (upper 40'C) and i plan to do some long driving trips across to the other island. i was considering changing to a thicker oil 5w40 or should i go for 10w40 (if i find synt at this grade).
>> i am aware of a stat in the filter housing that opens to increase oil flow to turbo when engine is hot. Does this rob the engine for oil pressure? (is it normal?)
>>do the Nanocom or hawkeye offer oil pressure readings? i still need to get one.

Hi Joseph. I would say that the pressure range of 21-43psi is dependant upon oil viscosity, ambient temperature and how it is being driven. Assume that you have 5w40 oil in northern Norway driving up icy hills I could well see the pressure rising to 43psi, but in Malta with 5w30 oil on dusty bumpy tracks the engine just won't make the higher pressures.

The key thing with the oil pump is to check that the pesky oil pump bolt has not come loose over the years. Whilst you are checking that, run a decent oil system cleaner through the engine prior to dumping the oil. You will find that the small oil galleries and ports within the engine do gum up over time and a good clean will do them the world of good. I was having trouble with my TD5 and this appears to have sorted out the low pressure issue post head replacement. I will at some point in the near future dropping the sump and check the oil pump over.

In the meantime I have bought a Madman gauge and have fitted all the sensors to keep an eye on what the engine is doing. In answer to your other question a nano com or hawkeye will not tell you the oil pressure, you have done the right thing and fitted an external gauge.

Filling with 5w40 will help your oil pressure and considering you live in a part of the world that is generally warmer than the UK for more of the year you could definitely get away with it.
