Happens all the time! It's usually the actuator unit on the door.
You can get them for around 40quid, google 'defender central locking actuator' Simple enough job to swap out. |

Mine stops working in the cold weather.... I have in the past taken the door card of and squirted a bit if WD40 around the mechanism and that's freed it off

It will be the wires from the b post to the door inside the rubber sleeve that have broken. Very common and easy to fix with a bit of good quality wire and a soldering iron.

99% chance of it being the wires. As diduan said, get ready for all the others to go. Try and get a roll of good quality cable(with a high number of conductors that can still be flexible in low temperatures) and do all the central locking wires and electric windows(if you have them) in all the doors. The cable size/quality JLR use is abyssmal(their procurement must just go out to buy the cheapest they can get hold of!!).
Each time you open and close the doors it creates wear on the cables which eventually causes the conductors to break. Its a pain in the ass to do, but if you do it with cable that should have been used in the first place you won't need to do it again. |

Check the wires for continuity, if they're bad chop through them and replace with some new wire. If the wires are good it'll be the actuator in the door, but it's normally the wires.
Don't bother buying a new door harness from Land Rover, it's about £70 for a couple of wires with a rubber boot in the middle and a connector on either end, it'll fail just like the original in next to no time!
Don't try doing it in situ, take the door card off and remove the harness, there is a plug just inside the B pilar you can un plug it there. It'll take 5 min to remove the door card, or an extra 20 min of swearing trying to fix the wire in situ. You'll probably tear the foam water shedder behind the door card when you try to peal it off, so buy a new one, they're only about £8 from Land Rover. |
