Ok so this is a question about my RRC project but is just as applicable to the defender. There are currently no brake disc shields fitted and I wonder how important they are. My concern is that muck could work its way in the void between the stub axle and disc and damage the ABS sensors. Any thoughts? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I do have them on my defender but haven't noticed much dirt behind them, then again I don't do a huge amount off road. 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I remove them from our training vehicles and anything else that goes off road regularly, makes cleaning easier, bit leave them on the more road based vehicles. Helps keep the road Salt/grim off the latter Cheers

Right ok, so it seems as the Range Rover will be mostly on road biased ten it's probably a good idea to get some. 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Many years ago when I had a RRC I took it into have a MOT and it failed as the shields had been attacked by the rust worm. I can't see why it would be a reason to fail unless it was classed as dangerous parts. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

Offroad use the 'mud shields' just shield the mud from being cleaned off On my training vehicles when I do the first replacement set of bearings then I leave the shields off as this happens

I will probably key the new ones up and paint them in RCP and CIO buzzweld to prolong their life 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

This is what greeted me on for a routine pad change and I was told the instructor had washed the vehicle hence the top of the damper and the bit of chassis is clean. Sadly they won't budget for Mach 5's to allow easy cleaning, and wonder why I can spend a hour pressure washing after I finish teaching, as I know what It's like. |

Any time I go off road the wheels come off mine anyway to have a good clean so perhaps that's why I haven't really had a problem. Definately a nightmare to clean with the wheels on! 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Just as an update, I went for it in the end, new brake shields fitted all round. Rubbed down and buzzweld primer and paint applied before fitting. Should last a while

Hi Grafty. Did exactly the same with Miffy, last month, after not having front guards for the last 5 years or so. Took them off initially as they were rattling. Post replacement no noticeable difference to anything, but I did note that the forward part of the guard is flared which I assume is to promote an increase of cool air across the disk whilst driving. Which must help... Maybe...

Yeah I reckon they'll promote some kind of brake cooling. I think it just looked bare without to be honest. And let's face it - landrover wouldn't have fitted them if they weren't needed 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I’m not too sure what they actually do! Shield the discs against what? Mine are original and in good order with no rust, however can’t figure out what their true function is!
