I used aluminium rivnuts when replacing mine. Aluminium is soft enough to enable you to insert them without a rivnuts tool. I just used a bolt, two nuts and a washer to insert them. I think they were M8 size, but you will find the sizes specified when you buy them. You have done the hard bit in getting the old fixings out!

Yes, you'll need rivnuts. The size will be determined by the bolt size but without going and crawling under mine I'd guess they're M6.
Rivnuts can be set using a cunning combination of nuts on a suitable bolt - I thin there's a sticky about this somewhere. Alternatively, use a proper rivnut tool, which looks a lot like a rivet gun. They're available for not huge cost on the likes of eBay and Amazon. Yes Rivnuts are the way to go... 
Standard Size M6, I replaced all mine when preparing to Dinitrol and wanted the old flaps off. I managed to get SS Rivnuts to work with a DIY Tool, protected the treads (shown below) prior to applying the Dinitrol and then used SS Bolts (nicely greased) hoping to avoid the seizure of these later on... These are obviously all directly in the firing line off the rear (and front) wheels...

Exhaust side is more tricky...from memory, I unhooked the Exhaust and managed to maneuver it far enough out of the way to get in there... first to deliberately shear off 2 out of the 3 bolts (just a rubbish arrangement...) when I knew they were corroded too much, also very difficult to get any PlusGas or similar into where it would be needed to try a loosen the threads. I did heat one bolt initially also, but didn't get anywhere. I Drilled out what was left, (at this point I had already decided to do the lot with Rivnuts). I blew out the 'cavity' with an air line (glasses on) to try and get all the rubbish out (successfully i'd say) prior to protecting the inside of the Cross Member. That was my logic too!
I bought the Sealey AK3984 off Amazon for £30. Will PM you the link as I don’t think we’re allowed to link to commercial websites on here. Replaced the cubby box rivnuts with it so far and it worked well. Have to do mudflaps at some stage too. There are some threads on here regarding what type of rivnuts to use where. Basically like for like metal but there are some other good tips regarding corrosion prevention. Worth having a search around. Cheers Jason |

Finally got my rear step and mud flap off, have to say some of the holes have seen better days. Now are all rivnuts roughly the same outside diameter size ? Does the hole have to be exact tight fit ?
