So... for several months I have had a noisy EGR. Not had any problems with the dash warning light, and I also have a diagnostic device...again no errors logged. Just a noisy chukka-chukka (noisier than normal) - also heard on the overrun sometimes.
Yesterday I changed my air filter and fuel filter. Guess what! No more noisy EGR!!! Seems unlikely to me that changing filters could do this... Both filters would last have been changed less than 20k miles ago (by the main dealer)... Anyone any ideas? Don't understand how the filters could affect the EGR... It could have been something as simple as the lid on the airfilter box not being closed correctly and air being drawn in through the gap. Everything is so finely calibrated that it doesn't take much to upset the system. Probably not but it is all I can think of. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Thanks spudfan... it did take me ages to get the air box cover on right - I could just feel round the back to make sure the rear lugs were located correctly. There was also a slight change to the induction noise, so this is indeed possible... The new filter is OEM (and I hope the old one was as it was put in by a main dealer)
The old filter was quite dirty... Car's done 36k miles (so this should have been the 2nd filter from new Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Yes, when the lid on the air filter box is not fitted correctly it sounds very different. This is what made me think that the airflow might be different.
I found this supplier very good. They are also a site sponsor. I use the Mahle stuff. https://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/service-...-209-c.asp 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Well I am amazed that replacing an air filter can affect (repair!!!) an noisy EGR
Mine's much quieter but not completely back to "normal" - maybe I will order a Mahle filter when I get a chance Thanks chaps... great forum Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |
