just recently changed from a 2.4 to a 2.2 after 10 yrs and feel that the 2.2 needs more gear changes on the lower speeds to keep in the power band,
However I had a BAS remap on the 2.4 that was awesome so that may have been the reason that is pulled so well from low speeds in a higher gears.

I dont notice any less noise as the 2.2 has no carpets in (as per the XS spec of that time) and the 2.4 was full carpeted, the 2.2 I have has very noisy wranglers MTR and the 2.4 had BFG’s, ATR’s - so that is a big difference too.

Its probably going to boil down to your financial bracket, and the choice of having a newer vehicle (2.2) compared to an older one (2.4).

For me - I have had S2, S3, TDI-300, TD5, 2.4 TDCI and now the 2.2 TDCI - a natural progression - and so far the 2.4 has been the best vehicle I have owned, but after only 2 months with the 2.2I am not yet able to make a valid Judgment,
Its different, newer and shiny, has different tyres, roof rack, internal set up and no remap - so Ive got to live with it a while yet to get to know the vehicle and will let you know.

Thumbs Up

How about fuel economy Wyvern?

Could be important for the op if doing high mileage - a you say early days, remap etc but what are you're I so far?

I had to ask didn't I Mr. Green

I'm currently showing a half full tank after 312 miles Mr. Green

I said that someone would say that! Rolling with laughter

If you want to stay in a world of warped manifolds, cracked cylinder heads, leaking fuel pressure regulators, oil-filled ECUs and alternators, five speed transmissions, and no second row head restraints in 110/130 variants, then stick with a TD5.

On the other hand, if you want to progress to a world of failed output adaptor shafts, rattling clutches, faulty VCVs (2.4), failed oil pumps (2.2), and transmission backlash, by a Puma.

As has been said above, thay all have their flaws, they all have their strengths, and they all have their fans who swear that one is better than the other. In practice, it's down to personal preference.

Birdy makes a very good point and if you need to go to city centres such as London and Manchester regularly, definitely something to consider.

2.2s are by their nature, younger vehicles, so tend to be more expensive.

Other than that, I would buy on condition and servicing record ahead of the engine.

Who cares? I suppose the people who live there might!

Just one more reason, as if another was needed, not to go to our over-crowded and polluted cities. Rolling with laughter

Had a TD5 disco which I loved, too defer 2.4 more me! 2.2 can't say! But more capacity and higher compression more effficency ( NOS) better towing ability. However 2.2 good remap and usual mods (dpf?) etc probably just as good! Still love been behind the wheel! Thumbs Up Rolling with laughter

We did a short run from cornwall to the mul of Kintyre the first week we owned it and it was about the same as the 2.4, getting about 400 miles before the ping with a brimmed tank, going both there and back, but that was with 2 canoes on top and a brisk wind - and the Wrangler tyers on - so would expect that it would be about the same or maybe a little better overall once I get used to the gearing and power band.
It was very smooth at 60-70 mph and sat nicely on the motorways at that speed. I did a couple of my regular runs up to london and back with no canoes on and pushing it a little, and noticed that the tank needs filling at the 320 - 350 mark , which again was not far off what the 2.4 did. ...
- but it would need Caterham’s superior fuel saving skills to see how much can be squeezed out of the tank!

Thumbs Up

I drove a TDi for years and loved the turbo whistle. By the same token, I quite like the "shlorking" sound the 2.2 intake makes when the turbo spools up.

The 2.2 seems like a good motor - early days yet!

I bought a 2.2 as it's Euro 5 thinking the 2.4 Euro 4 would be banned before the 5 so I'd have a few more years.

Turns out they're just jumping directly to banning anything that isn't Euro 6.

Ive had 2 x 2.4's & 1 x 2.2...cant tell much difference & frankly ALL Defenders feel different even if they're the same, if that makes sense?!?!

The only notable but very minor differences to me are (on mine at least), the 2.2 is quieter & has a dreadful fly by wire lag/over-run & the 2.4's seemed a little harsher & felt like they had more grunt...'felt' being probably down to the noisier lump. Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains
