Traction front without rear prop?
Hi

Checking my transfer box (as I see drips from the Ashcroft main shaft and hear a crunch when de oil is warm).

Removed the rear prop. Wanted to move the car 10 inch so I can easy get the front bolts from the prop out.
But I have no traction at all. I see the rear prop spinning.. when engaged the central diff nothing is happening (no traction). I do have a Ashcroft central diff too.

Is this normal?

Regards

Q.

With the centre diff lock engaged you should be able to drive the vehicle with the rear propshaft removed.

Check the diff lock light is illuminated. For some reason your lock is not engaging.

Diff lock light is on.

So leveler is working. But no traction.

What to check next?

Otherwise I start removing the transfer box.

If you have an ashcroft atb centre diff it will not transfer torque to the front it the rear is spinning with no load.

This is a characteristic of the atb rather than an lsd.
Lightly applying the handbrake should allow it to drive. Be warned that with a centre atb jacking the vehicle can be very dangerous as you cannot lock the ddiff as you could as standard. Therefore always use a wheel (good) chock.

Thank you Steve

Didn't know a Ashcroft diff was not lockable.
Then this probably right.
I have removed the transfer box tonight. Will check it tomorrow.
At first sight it looked if there was alloy in the oil.. so a bearing is spinning in the housing or something is not fitted right.

The Ashcroft centre ATB diff is lockable:

Note the ATB centre can still be locked like the stock unit when required, locking the diff is still advised when prolonged wheel spin is anticipated.

See http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/di...-diff.html

It seems that you have a significant fault.

I've always thought it a shame that there isn't a version of the Ashcroft ATB that includes a full lock capability, technically it is feasible. That would be the ultimate axle diff!
