Unwanted Engineering Challenge
I've fitted a nice new bumper to my 90 that includes a central towing point but it didn't come with a pin. I've then bought the shortest pin I could find, which is still too long, with the intention of drilling a new hole for the retaining pin and cutting the end off. But this is where it's all gone wrong.

I set the pin up in my pillar drill and started the new hole with a 2mm bit but got about half way through and the bit snapped. It's done so below the surface, so there's nothing to get a hold on. I tried drilling it out with a slightly larger bit but it wouldn't touch the drill material. I've then carefully drilled from the other side of the pin in the hope that I could knock the remains of the drill bit through, but it won't budge at all.

So, in summary, I've got a 25mm diameter steel pin with the remains of a 2mm drill bit embedded in it to about half way through, and a 6mm diameter hole from the other side to the tip of the drill bit.

I've currently got the pin in the freezer in the vain hope that I can shrink it enough to loosen its' grip on the drill bit remains, but I'm open to other suggestions! Darren

Get a load of heat into the pin. The steel will expand and the drill bit should come out.

That's a possibility. It's a big lump of steel though, so getting a lot of heat into it could be a challenge. I suppose I could put it in the oven... Darren

I was thinking more like a blow torch. You would need to get the drilled area cherry red and i will come out

^^^^^^ as above use some direct heat, get it cherry red & punch the drill bit out. If you don't have any suitable blow torch then maybe a trip into your local car repair garage might get be on the cards. Good luck Thumbs Up

Several options:

1. Get a new pin, ideally of the right length!

2. Find someone with a spark erosion machine.

3. Using a pointed punch at the bottom of the 6mm hole, belt the bejasus out of it in the hope of bursting through and knocking the fragment out.

4. Heat the pin with oxy acetylene or oxy propane gear in the hope of expanding it enough to free off the fragment.

You will never be able to drill out a broken drill bit, it simply cannot be done. Spark erosion is one of very few ways to get rid of one.

Buying a new pin and starting again could be my last resort. Unfortunately I can't find one off the shelf that's closer to the right length. With a bit of fettling, I've made the pin from my DB ball and pin tow hitch fit, but it's not ideal. The next standard size up is the one I've bought, but it's about 1.5 inches too long.

I'll try some heat and see how it goes. Darren

If you have a 6mm hole through from the rear, then the way to get through to the end of your 2mm drill is to take a Dremel (die grinder) with a small stone to grind through and then take a pointed drift or punch and try to drive out the drill. Once you get the drill to move (a bit) you can take a 2mm welding rod and gently tap the drill out. Dave's not here man...

Thanks for the idea. I can see the end of the bit in the 6mm hole, but belting seven bells out of it with a punch hasn't got it to move at all yet. Darren

chances are its jammed by swarf/cut metal, when you are hitting it out you from the opposite side you will be making it tighter, drill 6mm from the original side until you meet the broken drill and then hit it from the original side with something towards your opposiet side 6mm hole, then knock it back and forth from each end drilling a bit deeper with the 6 mm each time it moves, you will win DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
