It's certainly labour intensive and I only fitted a NAS 90 cage!

Though that is a fine looking 110 Cool the right amount of mods.

That cage looks sweet on your wagon!

Did you get it shipped to NZ yourself? I've seen Devon4x4 give prices for shipping, but haven't bothered emailing other retailers.

Also; off topic, but which bumper is that?

Cheers
Bruce

Heya!

Devon44 shipped it over by sea after I baulked at the air option. Took a while and I had to do all the customs carry on myself. But got here in good order at less than half the price.

Winch bumper is a mantec one made for the husky winch.

Got it galvanized and powder coated, I think it's the last one of the factory shelf in the UK, FirstFour found it for me. A few rebranded ones still for sale out of the US though at much greater cost Shocked

A few LROCA members keen on SD cages too, but cost always the issue. I may enquire to become the local dealer Laughing Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Thanks very much Thumbs Up All of the mods have a purpose, and an awful lot of the mods are bought used. Just as well considering the cost of the cage and fitting .....

Reading the various comments it seems fairly common that it isn't especially straightforward to fit a cage to the Defender, but the simpler the cage and the less intrusive it is, the easier the install. Sadly I chose the more intrusive one that needed the most strip-down and couldn't have been much more complicated.

Ah well, such is life. Still love it though Laughing

If you drive off-road an external cage is usefull as it protects the body from trees etc. Twisted Evil

Yes I am aware of that. I drive "off road" a great deal but don't tend to get into the type of terrain that would give me any benefit from an external cage - i'm never pushing through heavily-wooded areas or overgrown green lanes, and if I were I also wouldn't care.

My cage is there purely for personal protection - nothing to do with protecting the vehicle. If I ever get into the position of rolling it, the vehicle condition will be the least of my concerns. As long as my family are undamaged, the Defender can be smashed into a million pieces for all I care.

Purely my personal opinion, and I know this may put the cat amongst the pigeons, but I also don't particularly like the look of an all-external cage - mine is about as unobtrusive as it is possible to get in a non-competition vehicle with the limited cab space inside a Defender, and that's the look I wanted. Fair play if external is the way you want to go though, just doesn't suit me Thumbs Up

I can understand the aesthetics thing.

Each to their own and all that Thumbs Up

The external one on mine also gets use as a roof and side rack, suits my purposes well Cool Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Yes that is one of the big advantages of the external version (and there are many I agree) but I never load my roof sufficiently to need a rack supported by a cage - if I have a large load to carry I tow my ex-Military Penman trailer, which if anything is tougher than the Defender Laughing : -

Beautiful job.

which tent is that? Are you happy with it?

I eventually went with the NAS spec cage ie internal/external.. Purely for safety in roll over.

I don't find that the internal hoop limits my head space or impinges in anyway.

Yours in looking great too Thumbs Up

The tent is a Feldon Shelter, a local brand, mine is about #50 off the production line.

Yes, very happy with it, although it's off at the moment as the rain has started setting in and we wont be using it as much until summer hits again.

Local spec here says I cant have the internal caging as it'll hit my noggin in a crash (!) - SD engineers confirmed it. I would have opted for it otherwise, but after having installed it all I do wonder how much of a chore that internal section would have been? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Yea you need to put some padding around the internal bar. Seems like it wouldn't cause too much damage when padded... 1999 Defender 110

Would you believe that padding would actually make it less legal round here?
