Hi Guys,
Over the last few months we have had some cold winters and our local councils and motorway people have been buisy coating everything in a thick layer of salt. This has turned my Red SHB 110 into a Black/Purple one What is most shocking about it though is how much it drops off and then re forms into salt on the drive. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I now understand fully why Eric avoids the winter roads Cant be good to sit wet dripping salty water down onto salty ground. Though I suppose gravity is somewhat of an advantage? Ether way I have swept it away and gotten rid of the mud and salt mix. On a side note, does anyone have any good ways to get oil out of blockwork? Click image to enlarge Landlady may not take kindly to my 110 marking it as hers..... Keep it there Shaggy, we got enough of that stuff already. But by the look of your pictures it seems they distribute it even more liberally your end than here. We probably need two weeks of rain to wash away the salt on our roads. It has been very cold and very dry here for weeks now, so no further salting has been done for at least the last 10 days, but the old greasy salt film is firmly stuck to the asphalt.
For the grease spots on the blockwork, if the weather stays dry you can try talcum powder. A decent layer of several milimeters which you refresh every few days. Talcum powder is an excellent grease absorber, always works for me. Eric You never actually own a Defender. Thanks for the recommendations guys
Its been very dry and cold here recently (as much as it can be in Kent ) so it just seems to be piling up. When I get my 110 back I'm going to invest in a small electric pump I can stick in a bucket and give the chassis a good wash down weekly to try and keep it at bay until I can get it sorted. I'd love a pressure washer but I would need an enormous hose real and extension cable to enable me to do so. Or better yet one of those wheel and under body washer stations that they have at building sites for tipper lorries Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

white spirit, petrol, paraffin, or diesel apply liberally and then wipe up with a clean rag, when dry scrub with neat washing up liquid or washing powder and hose off.
when clean treat the blocks to a sealant it will stop any future oil spills penetrating the blocks and can be wiped up quickly with white spirits DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

If you can't get it out of the blocks, get a couple of flat blade screwdrivers and prise the block out, turn it over and pop it back in, bingo

^^^ hahahaha what a fantastic idea
Your 90 is looking good Retro (under all the muck!) I bet you get a fair amount more road salt than we do I must say, I wasn't keen on the Red of the SHB 110 but it did still look remarkably clean despite its layers of crud.
