Hi folks,
I recently obtained some 30mm alloy wheel spacers to try on my defender 90. They do not have the small hub centric flanges on that I understand should be in place when spacing out alloy wheels. Will it be safe to try these out? Advice appreciated folks. |

Hi
Those spacers are for steel wheels. The spacers with the location lugs are for alloys. |

I ran spacers for around 12 months, I was never fully happy with them and they were always in the back of my mind (I have since changed to an offset wheel).
They were hubcentric ones - I wouldn't be happy with all the forces a wheel is put through to go solely through the studs of a 30mm block of aluminium bolted to the hub. Having said that I have never heard of a spacer failing so maybe my justification is unfounded  2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Have had spacers and smaller steering wheel on my defenders for last 10 plus years to improve turning circle on three different versions of 90s without any problems, fitted them during warranty period as well and main dealer even kindly altered bump stops to improve the turning circle for me to get the most out of them.
They have just put spacers supplied by me onto my current 90Xs HT when they took the wheels off to balance them for me and its within warranty still  2015 HT XS 90

I have not got any but if I did (and I will at some point)
Go for the hubcentric ones they are supposed to be much better and less chance of any vibrations. I'm sure years ago Porsche used spacers on the 944 and other models... If they are good enough for them then I guess on a Defender they should be ok? |

I've run 30mm spacers for nearly a year now no problems but... they are good quality hubcentric. The mere fact you are doubting them woule rule them out for me. James

They sound like the type I used to put on original mini's
Basically a big washer..... Fine I would think on a 10" mini wheel given the mini I had probably struggled to have 40bhp 
I would not put that type on my truck... |

I have used the plain ones before and never had an issue. I couldn't fit the hubcentric ones as my back axle was had the big mushroom head shafts on so they wouldn't fit.
I made sure hub face was nice and clean, thread locked the spacer to hub bolts and I never had an issue with 35" tyres and 3.9v8 I checked the spacer nuts after 1st day and then 2 weeks, then every 3 months. And never had to tighten at all |

Don't forget to inform your insurers, dependant upon insurer they can get can quite alarmed by the use of them; personally I'm not a fan of them and quite recently a buddy of mine bought a Defender with them on and his insurer refused to cover the vehicle until they were removed! Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains
