New member. I also had this problem on 2009 110 County 2.4. Would sometimes go a few weeks and not do it but when it did it was after about driving a few minutes from cold and usually changing from third to fourth. Sounded like engine was dry or bad case of tappets. Back off throttle until engine quietens then okay. Noise not occurred since fitting new electrical control valve ( that may not be the correct term for it ) in the air filter.

Hello Saley
Interesting... ![]() Am I (we) joining a dot here that is relevant...? I have had the Engine Warning Light (MIL Light) come on now twice in 2 years bought a scangaugeII to read the fault code... ![]() Click image to enlarge P1103 Mass Air Flow Sensor In Range But Higher Than Expected D* d M* MAF This clears itself after around 6 cycles of starting / stopping the engine...and I have done nothing else to resolve this 'issue' (if indeed it is an issue / problem)... My understanding is that this 'sensor' (probably some sort of thermocouple device) is in the air inlet side of the air filter housing... Is this your 'electrical control valve'...'in the air filter'...you refer to... ![]() and could this be a factor in the 'bag of spanners mystery'... or as you say just a coincidence... ![]() Any insight D2N... ![]() https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

I suffered this 'bag of spanners' for four years and was recently pointed to the VCV by one of the guys at Alive. Changed it a couple of weeks ago and now living with a blissfully quiet engine. Feels like a new truck!

Hi Mark,
did you change the VCV yourself or did you get a garage to do it? i would try myself but i dont have any equipment to recode or relearn. |

Hi neverin...that would be my question also for vaucluse
Looking again at it looks like its posted from the D2N site sponsor Bell Auto Services... ![]() ![]() so one way to 'relearn' the VCV Maybe vaucluse or BAS can add more... ![]() https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

UPDATE
Had the VCV valve (Denso part) changed yesterday, along with pump relearn and pilot correction. Now the rattly spanner and pinking noises have gone. just left with a diesel sounding engine, Great!! I also had the fuel filter changed at the same time. well worth having done. Just a summary of the symptoms before:(all when engine under load, sounded fine when still) Engine sounding like a bag of spanners intermittently, Pinking noise occasionally, bearing type noise rattling, no faults being displayed or recorded. Thanks for all who contributed! |
