an emotive subject for sure. The big issue of course, most law abiding people (would say citizen but we are subjects) involvement with the police is for victim less crimes - minor traffic infringements. Needless to say as its a made up 'crime' to extract cash it tends to Censored off right minded people. Add an obnoxious public servant into the mix and its easy to see why plod gets a bad press.

I would like to see these victim less crimes removed from the police and gives to HMCE where they belong. It would do plod the power of good, think of all that time they would have to spend of real crimes which have victims.

Would save a fortune as well, no longer any need for 50k cars for them.

I think you are right or even local authorities.

We should remove the crimilisation bit of a lot of so call crimes - but actually are either petty and a waste of time/money or victimless. Mike

In terms of the law, it's a case of has the law and correct procedure been followed as opposed to trying to dodge out of it or similar phraseology. If there has been a mistake on the part of the officer, or comments made indicate something other than 100% integrity, then it is not legal, simple as that, and the driver can't be fined etc. My friend deals with many many cases of speeding and other motoring offences and most of them he handles are dropped due to procedural errors on the part of the officer.

On the opposite side of the coin, I dealt with a very pleasant officer who stopped me doing well in excess of 100mph (not in a defender of course Laughing ) and unknown to me at the time, in his report (I had to go to court) he made it clear that the weather was fine and dry, there was no other traffic, and believe it or not, actually complimented my driving Laughing and his text and a couple of other things saved me from a ban.

ETA - havent we got that already? I almost never see police on the motorways near me, only ever "traffic enforcement officers" ie not police officers.

44 in a 30 zone? Take your fine like a man, learn your lesson and move on. It's 30 for a reason and driving the cars we do which have a front end like a brick wall then you should be more careful. I know we all think we're the best drivers in the world and speed limits are for other, less skilled drivers, but it wouldn't kill you to respect the limit even if you disagree with it.

I would agree with the latter...but sometimes 30 arent there for safety...for many years residents, MPs, CLLRs pressure groups put 30's for the wrong reason...once 40 was clearly considered safe.

Is it safer to have all roads 50 or train people to drive etc based on conditions etc etc.

Whilst accepting the speed limit is important following a 30 when in a 30 - accepting the speed limit on the road blanketly when not driving, is why most of the people in this country are turning to lambs...lame whining do nothing lambs at that. Mike

most 30 limits are idiotic. Modern cars stop is a much shorter space than 30 years ago.

Same reason you will never see a speed scamera outside a school, its not about 'protecting' anyone, its about cold hard cash and its turned plod into a pimp collecting it. We know their pimps, they know their pimps so no surprise when joe public treats them like pimps.

Police Officers are public servants. they do what they are told. To call them "pimps" is insulting and I think that generally speaking they do a pretty good job in very difficult circumstances.

I agree with Mike re lambs though. Christ, witness how pathetic so many people were when it snowed. We used to just dig the car out and get on with it, like everyone did. not anymore it seems. its pathetic.

Speed limits... do I agree with them?.... Well, no, but at the end of the day they are there so I will try and keep in them... if I get caught going over it I will admit it and take the consequences- it is what honest respectable people do.

You have it good in the UK.... here in Germany most of the roads are down at 50, 30 and 20mph and they don't have well signposted day-glow speed cameras but hide them in sign posts, bollards and bins.

Here is a over exagerated example..... If I belive Murder is acceptable and not shouldn't be against the law, does that mean I should be able to do it if I don't get caught?

But isn't prevention better than a cure?...... granted driving through an estate at 150mph could be seen as fine as there is no victim... but then if someone walked out?

jaywalking is illegal!!

You have hit the nail on the head though, if the public could see common sense applied it wouldn't be so bad but while the rozzers pull people for 77 in a 70 etc then they can't expect to receive any respect back.

I agree completly that some of the limits are stoopid.... I hit 140mph in the Merc the other day and then had to remind myself there is a limit in the UK..... not needed in places *Cough*like the M6 Lakes area*Cough*.

Prime example... M4 past Newport... 50mph limit for about 15 miles... for no reason!!

A lot comes down to the traffic officer- I have come across good and bad ones- I couldn't be one as I would let responsible speeders off and fine every doddering old lady who forgot how to use indicators and how to monuver a roundabout many years ago!.... It just isn't Politically Correct Rolling Eyes

I'm not denying that I was speeding, and I would just accept it,

But...
- The speed limit had recently reduced from 40 to 30, it's a road I use quite often and wasn't even aware of it. Speaking to a collegue who lives up the road and she said that they've just spray painted over the old signs rather than remove them. The police officer seemed quite smug about the fact he'd caught a lot of people out
- The Discovery that came flying up behind me was causing more of a danger. The police officer even said he should have pulled the Disco over as 'he was coming flying up behind you'. Thats what Censored me off the most.

I've got in touch with the solicitor Mike reccommended, and am just waiting to hear back from them. Thumbs Up

If there's nothing they can do, fair enough, I was speeding, no denying that.

It's just the way the copper basically said it wasn't my fault yet still did me for it, rather than just giving me a warning.

Hardly fair.

Warren i think were in for the same....Plod robbing the motorist round here the sneaky tw.ts have put bin bags over a 40 sign up the road ? they should remove the sign and replace it with the appropriate speed limit before robbing the motorist ? NEVER TAKE LIFE SERIOUSLY. NOBODY GETS OUT ALIVE ANYWAY
