The Olympics
Well, they're over for another four years, but what a great two weeks. So what was your highlight?

Despite all the successes, many in sports I love and follow keenly, I think my Gold Medal moment was Fiji winning the 7s and as far as Team GB is concerned, Joe Joyce's huge magnanimity when being interviewed after his contentious loss in the Super Heavyweight gold medal bout last night. A gentleman sportsman. Thumbs Up

WELL DONE TEAM GB, Bow down BRING ON TOKYO....

PS, I've put my name down to be an umpire in the Women's Beach Volleyball in 2020. If I don't qualify, I'll be the water boy. Whistle Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

A great achievement in the medal table for such a small country. We should be extremely proud of all our medal winners.

Difficult to say which I enjoyed most.
Cycling seems an obvious choice, but it wasn't just the number of medals we won, but the way we won them.
Hockey was good after all the build up.
Then things like the gymnastics with 2 golds almost out of the blue.

The Independent quoted today......"Yet another economical debate has been triggered after it emerged that each medal won in Rio – 27 golds, 23 silvers and 38 bronzes – came at a price of £4,096,500 in National Lottery and exchequer funding over the four-year Olympic cycle".

£4m each medal wow Shocked but to help better understand it finishes by.....

"However, Sport Industry Research Centre have broken down that figure, and discovered that the success in Rio has cost each individual Briton just £1.09 per year in public funding. As Liz Nicholl, chief executive of UK Sport, explained on Sunday, “the funding is worth its weight in gold”

Cant disagree with her, what a huge boost for national pride Very Happy apparently the 2012 games encouraged over 100k brits to take up cycling and its still growing...the value of that across many different sectors, NHS, trade, manufacturing etc has to be worth every penny.

I know they reckoned London was special and for that reason they did the gold post boxes but I think gold post boxes should be a tradition to continue.
Just a thought but perhaps BT could save a bob or two by not sending out phone directories unless you actually ask for one and use the money they save to paint 27 phone boxes.

Absolutely awesome achievement by all the athletes and just goes to show how a team GB can match the rest of the world.

as long as they dont go and give them all knighthoods for essentially doing their job im not fussed.

In this country we know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. Mike

Well, I'm an old Pom, so good to see "us" doing well.
Not so good for the Aussies this year, so for sure they'll be working on that.
I didn't watch the Games continuously, just when I had the time, had the opportunity to see those legends Bolt & Phelps, but the most important aspect of it all to me, was that with all the crap going on in the world, it was just so good to see all of those young people doing their best, and to see the spirit that existed between them.

Well unlike many other countries, our athletes don't get large sums of cash or flats given to them for their successes, so a Knighthood or Damehood is the least we can give them for making us all so proud. Thumbs Up However, so should all those dedicated people behind each athletes success.

My highlight was just after it finished so I could start watching the telly and reading a newspaper again.

It's not all of us, Riverboy. I'm not 'proud', I couldn't give a toss about any them.

Honours should only be awarded for altruism, not for being completely self-centred. Olympic competitors do it solely for themselves, no one else and shouldn't receive gongs for it.

And all the time in the rest of Rio De Janeiro's favellas the murders continued unabated as did the poverty and general suffering. Well done spending a developing countries money on a first world entertainment project instead of where it's needed. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.
