I am a bit lost when searching the various existing topics about oil quality. Too many A1 to A5 and C1 to C3 numbers flying around.
I am sorting thru my on board toolbox and found a 1 liter Castrol Magnatec Professional 5W-30 bottle with following standards printed. SAE 5W-30; API SM/CF ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4, C3 VW 502 00/ 505 00: MB-Approval 229.31 Question, would this oil be ok to eventually top up my Puma 2.4 engine oil if that would be required. Thanks, Eric You never actually own a Defender. Hello ericvv
I would say yes...based on this... ACEA This is the European equivalent of API (US) and is more specific in what the performance of the oil actually is. A = Petrol, B = Diesel and C = Catalyst compatible or low SAPS (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur). Unlike API the ACEA specs are split into performance/application catagories as follows: A1 Fuel economy petrol A2 Standard performance level (now obsolete) A3 High performance and/or extended drain A4 Reserved for future use in certain direct injection engines A5 Combines A1 fuel economy with A3 performance B1 Fuel economy diesel B2 Standard performance level (now obsolete) B3 High performance and/or extended drain B4 For direct injection car diesel engines B5 Combines B1 fuel economy with B3/B4 performance C1-04 Petrol and Light duty Diesel engines, based on A5/B5-04 low SAPS, two way catalyst compatible. C2-04 Petrol and light duty Diesel engines, based on A5/B5-04 mid SAPS, two way catalyst compatible. C3-04 Petrol and light duty Diesel engines, based on A5/B5-04 mid SAPS, two way catalyst compatible, Higher performance levels due to higher HTHS. Castrol's latest Oil recommendation for the Dura Torq 2.4 list Magnatec 5W-30 A5 (which is further specified on the rear of the container as covering A1/B1 and A5/B5 Oil Selection Tool is here...(set for your vehicle) http://applications.castrol.com/oilselecto...2007-2011) SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Yes.
Loads of people get too anal about 'must be this, must be that' ... ANY 5W/30 synthetic oil is fine in a 2.4, and any 5W/30 with an ACEA 'C' rating is fine is 2.2 cat equipped motor and everything earlier ... Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

One of the service receipts I have from a LR dealer shows they used Castrol Magnatec Professional 5W-30 in my 2.4 Puma. For what they charged it was more like liquid gold they used.

Thanks all. So it should be ok specs for the 2.4, back in the tool box now, may never need it, but good to have it in the truck just in case.
