Over the next few months I'm planning to get my new 2015 110 USW ready for a few trips out into the desert sand dunes (trips will begin later in the year when the heat of the summer subsides). I will fit a front steering guard which incorporates recovery points, but I'm less sure what to do to the rear.
The vehicle came with the factory tow setup shown in the picture below. If I use a strop between the two rings will this be suitable for desert snatch recoveries? ![]() Click image to enlarge This website seems to suggest so http://www.shirelrc.co.uk/old/Newsletter_P...Points.pdf but I'm just looking for guidance as I don't want to rip parts off or twist anything! 2015 110 Defender Heritage Utility Station Wagon 2014 B8 Audi RS4 2003 Audi A2 1.4 Tdi |

The two rings are trailer brake-away eyes, these are designed to attach a cable that in the event of a trailer becoming detached from the tow hitch it will apply the brakes on the trailer. I would say No to use as a recovery point as they will not be rated.
If you are playing in sand this can cause a lot of resistance when being recovered, JATE rings fitted to the chassis and a recovery eye or NATO hitch fitted to the rear crossmember would be best. The problem with a ball hitch is there is no positive way to secure the strop. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html 90 V8 - Maggie http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic42564.html 110 TD5 - Buggsy http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic59029.html 52HG25 lightweight https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic72342.html D3 Hse - Fiona Capri 2l S - Anna Think I might have a problem............ |

Simplest might be to substitute your 50mm ball for one of these: -

Part number LR008244 from Land Rover themselves. Like mine below.

If I were planning trips into the desert I would be looking at 2inch recovery both front and rear. Site sponsor 4x4 Overlander would be my first port of call. If I recall they sell a combined steel steering guard with 2" recovery for the front and other options for the rear but give Brendan a call. Defender 90XS SW

Thanks for the suggestion, i've been in contact with Brendan recently regarding a few bits and pieces (wheel carrier and rear door gas strut), unfortunately after swift initial response, and despite several reminders, I haven't received any subsequent emails from him. ![]() 2014 B8 Audi RS4 2003 Audi A2 1.4 Tdi |

I was wondering what had happened there.
Just had a search of emails and it looks like our spam filter has gone into over drive. Have found a few emails which I should have responded to in the spam box along with the emails offering led/roof tents/shipping etc ![]() Looks like I need to apologise to a few email enquirers. Going to be a busy Sunday morning doing emails. Brendan |

First email sent.
To err is human, to really cock up you need a computer! ![]() Back to more on topic. First do not forget the humble shovel. Use of the humble shovel can drastically reduce the force to extract a stuck vehicle. Reduced force = increased safety Now people argue about the safety/strength of the standard tow ball. IF using standard tow ball as a recovery point, one of the dangers is the strap coming off the tow ball. A bungee strap correctly used will reduce the risk of the strap slipping off the tow ball. Snatch recoveries can be effective however if incorrect equipment and techniques are used they can be dangerous. Brendan |
