Serpentine Belt - chirpy chirpy, ahh but which one?
Gidday all,

I'm ordering in a new belt, on start up for a few minutes the front end of the vehicle will give a slight squeak-squeak-squeak I can hear while idling. I could be wrong, but I'm willing to say that it is a pulley bearing drying up (?).

Which pulleys are the likely suspects? (if one is prone to this, I'll just order a new one with the belt)

Logic suggests maybe the smaller diameter ones ? (less contact area and higher life time rotations)

Or is it a case of all of them ?

What is the best way to fault find without poking a stethoscope into the fan? Lube them one at a time, until it goes? (how?)

It's a TDCi with air-con.

As always, your wisdom appreciated. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

The first one to squeak on my high-mileage Defender is the equivalent (I don't have a/c) to number 9 in your diagram. This doesn't mean that yours will be the same of course.

Interesting,

Could spraying some lithium lube at them one at a time work?

Not to fix as such, but to rule out the offender. I'm hoping white lithium won't be so bad as WD40...

?

I had a similar chirping on the Disco 3 I had until recently, this would occur primarily at tickover and more so from cold.

It turned out to be the tensioner (#4,) not the pulley bearing though but the pivot bearing, it had slack in it that allowed the moving part to make contact with the fixed part which would squeak when there was movement in it at low speed.

It's not too difficult to check anyway, best way I've found is to remove the belt and then spin all the pulleys by hand to listen/feel for any rough sounding ones.

How many miles has the motor done?
My policy is if I'm going to change 1 bearing I do all of them.
I figure they have all done the same work so the rest will need doing sooner rather than latter.
The old ones along with the belt go in the back somewhere as back ups on trips. Cheers,
Kyle.

100,000kms

Good call on removing it... Will do, let it cool down, then give em a whirl.

Don't have enough funds to do em all! I do note that the two mentioned so far are smaller... Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Right, this may count as an almost free fix, if it works...

On the 300Tdi, the tensioner pulley (number 4 in your diagram) used to create a chirping noise when running very slightly out of true.

The tensioner looks to be the same as you show for the TDCi, although it looks like your tensioner is designed to work upwards whereas the 300Tdi bears down on the belt to tension it.

The 'fix' for the 300Tdi problem was to remove the tensioner and superglue a 1p piece (5p if you are feeling truly flush) to the rear of the fixed part at 2 o'clock (looking from the front of the engine) and then bolt the tensioner back into place.

This changes the angle that the belt tensioner runs at and will stop the chirping noise.

Sounds daft, but 'tis true!

**** Note, local currency may work as well as good old British coin of the realm...

Hope this works!

@Alien, the smaller pulleys will be spinning faster for a given belt speed, so will have done more work 😉

I'm also of the opinion of if it ain't broke don't fix it yet, unless access is a complete pig!

RPM is only a part of the picture, there is also the radial load, which from the bearing's perspective, is a function of the the bearing size and belt 'wrap' (which is partly a function of the pulley size... Rolling Eyes )

Some pulleys will have more, some less.

The tensioner, by default, has it's fair share Thumbs Up

This is using 'all things being equal' in terms of manufacturing, obviously any pulley can go tits up if it wants to. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...
