I changed my transfer box ratios, much better option but just my opinion.

I was planning to have one of these fitted to my TD5:

Friend has a 300tdi with the 1.2 gears.
Goes nicely on the motorway, slow off the mark and hard work when towing. I have a td5 with the ashcroft raised ratio 5th option. Having ridden in both, both of us would go down my route doing it again. |

I have been considering the Ashcroft transfer box option as it's well proven and not too expensive.
I've heard it's great (for the Td5 at least) on the motorway, but can be annoying in the lower gears, especially if towing - as others have said. I like the sound of the 5th gear ratio changes (V8 gearing?). Miker, I assume you had it fitted as part of an R380 recon/refurb, rather than fitted on its own? If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost (PM if you prefer?). Cheers, Will |

Yeah I sent mine in for a replacement/recond R380 as the old one was screaming in every gear.
It is the V8 top gear they fit yes. Definitely makes a difference. I need to fit a rev gauge, but 75 is comfortable, 80 is OK and 85 is achievable. Even then engine noise is nowhere near your biggest problem! Cost me £1212 all in, that was their 1 day fitting. All prices available on their website, so no secret! |

I have a 2002 TD5 110 CSW with a stage 1 IRB remap and an Ashcroft 1.22 discovery lt230 transfer box. I had it fitted by Ashcroft and IIRC it was about £450. With the stage 1 remap and 1.22 lt230 the 110 flies. I have towed a fully laden 19ft Ifor with it, offroaded and over landed through Europe and would definitely say it was a worthwhile investment. I would also recommend Ashcroft as well and advise you speak to them before making a decision. Do not take the risk of buying a second hand lt230 out of a disco, I did and it proved to be a costly mistake.
There is one quirk that irks me and that is 30mph is irritatingly between 3rd and 4th gear. So if this is the sort of thing that would drive you up the wall, perhaps a rover drive is the better choice. All in all and after 3 years I can safely say I made a good choice. |

Transfer ratio change is the way to go. I had a GKN overdrive and it was a constant pain in the backside. I've put disco gearing in the last 4 Td5s and my 200 and they're fab. I tow 3.5t a lot with an ifor Williams LM146 and find it better than the standard gearing if I'm honest. Certainly no worse and improved MPG on long runs as well.
