Am I being foolish to think locking my bike up in the centre of London will be safe during business hours?

Ooh, I like a Bad Boy. Always hankered after the 'Ultra'.
Generally the City should be fine. If you're there during the day it'll be heaving with people and loads of couriers. Perhaps find a spot near one of the multitude of busy coffee shops, where people will be in and out all day. Perhaps in a Pedestrianised zone where cycling is not allowed and any tea-leaf will stand out if scarpering on a nicked bike. Whilst not perfect, the City generally has low crime rates, given the number of plod to public is higher than anywhere else. The rascals tend to focus on scooter smash and grabs at Hermes than nicking your BB. Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

ultra was too pricey. I went for the hub x3 speed. nothing special but it's a bit different with the lefty and what appears to be a single speed. I have to say the frame is very stiff / uncomfortable but for short hacks it's ok. I'm gonna upgrade the brakes and get some larger tyres to try and make it a wee bit more comfortable. I just need to pray for some dry weather tomoz otherwise it's going to scupper my plans. got a meeting and can't be turning up looking like I've just been dragged through a bush. |

You must be going to London by rail or air, Caterham. I can't imagine you barrelling down the M1 in your Defender at speeds in excess of, say, 40mph !
Sorry I forgot - as per your Easter message you live at Lambeth Palace anyway! |

I work in the City & the Wharf - I can tell you the bikes are left well alone, too many professionals around and a lot of Police and CCTV...
Go anywhere else though and I wouldn't guarantee not having a bent / kicked wheel... Michael |

Boris bikes are a wonderful idea, always use them when I pop back to 'Londres', but their practicality is governed a lot by time, location and weather. By that I mean if you pick up a bike and ride during rush hour in to a busy work area, likely all the stations will be full if you don't get there first thing. Likewise weather has an impact. If it's raining, you'll have access to a lot of bikes, but again docking stations at your destination might be full. Sunny or dry days, middle of London where people might hop on and hop off (their purpose, rather than commuting) and you'll be fine. But like you, I did once borrow a bike to cycle to a meeting by Hammersmith Tube on a drizzly day (weather, rush hour, commuting tube station) only to find the docking station full. And the next. And the one after that. I eventually had to dock the bike at the docking station I picked it up from and walk back in Monsieur Le Grenadier
