I've got that "issue" on mine as well. I'm not sure if my observation is correct, but it mostly happens after driving steep roads with many u-turns. I suspected it to be some kind of diff-windup but it happens so rarely that I really can't verify that.

Mine's being making that noise off and on for five years now. Otherwise smooth, clunk free drive/gear changes (apart from when the missus is driving
 ). I put it down to character, multi jointed archaic drive train and the not quite micron tight tolerances achieved during assembly ! |

Yesterday I had another "dull clunk" after quite a while. Just to mention: It occurred after driving on a dirt track with diff-lock engaged and about 4km on tarmac heading home.
Another not so unusual thing which might be linked to the "clunk": It's hard to explain, but the morning after, the engine sounded like the one of a lorry (louder and somewhat more powerful). I couldn't say that I didn't like that sound. (it would be great if there was a button for that feature)  . _____

the dull clunk that I have is not related to driving conditions - all on normal tarmac roads. It just happens occasionally when turning off the engine. Normally its really quiet (slight whoosh sound) but maybe 5-10% of the time there is an abrupt dull clunk from the engine (I think). Just sounds a bit unusual, but not that dramatic...any others have this? Just trying to gauge how common it is before I take it back to the dealers. thanks.

Just to add from the Workshop Manual:
"The valve is motor driven, under the control of the engine control module (ECM), to allow varying amounts of exhaust gas into the intake manifold depending on the engine operation. At engine switch off the valve opens and closes several times to clear any deposits which may have accumulated during running." Normally its pretty quiet and can verge on near silent; but over time as deposit start to accumulate it can get a little noisy in operation, I think in most instances this s just a result of clearing the gunk rather than a portent of an actual mechanical issue. Although a particularly stubborn gunk deposit could cause damage to the valve or motor if it limits or reduces full range motion or creates too much resistance for the motor to push against. |

Hi Supacat, thanks for your input. In my case it's not the noise which is "worrying". Usually the motor stops in a quite slow and gente manner (I never had a car shutting the engine down so smoothly) but sometimes it stops almost at an instant. In that case you can hear something Jerry described as a "clunk" but most noticeably you can feel it as the whole truck gets a little shake. It feels almost the same like the engaging clutch when you are on the brakes. . _____

Hi just read the post,mine does this too (2012 2.2 90) I think it just depends at what position the engine stops,sometime it stops smoothly ,sometimes it kicks back on its own compression.This is perfectly normal.I think its more unusual when it stops smoothly being a diesel!!!

Hi Gaz, now that sounds reasonable. At least I can live with that explaination and stop worrying about that clunk from now on.

I've been getting that occasionally as well on my 2016 2.2. I never had this on my TD5 though, so kind of strange. I'm now going to see if letting it idle for a bit before shutting it off helps. I've seen it called dieseling before, but as stated, my TD5 (along with numerous other modern diesels that I've owned) have never done this.
