I was into vintage Splitscreen campers [VW's] for 15 years and saw a similar thing happen there, you have the guys at the top [most money] setting the trends/fashion and everyone wanted to emulate them.
Here the top guys buy their brand new defenders and first thing they do is ditch the wheels and change the interiors, they then bolt a load of expensive after market parts and everyone else is in awe of what they've created and want their motors to look the same. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to do the same but old enough that it doesn't bother me one way or the other really, I like boosts because they're no longer in fashion so really cheap, just got my new take offs for £350 [well 500 miles ] It took me quite a few weeks of searching with ebay being the place for a bargain, I watched wheels being listed over and over again for £800 then £700 then £600 then they'd disappear where I guess the seller accepted an offer outside ebay. Boosts won't sell for big bucks because the top motors don't have them fitted and there's loads of them around, oh and of course the tyres fitted to most new take off's get slated as well . Back to VW's for a sec, "Rat Look" was the way to go, everyone wanted patina [rust], slammed, big motor, Porsche brakes and wheels. Show line up's got boring because everyones motor's looked the same. Guess that's fashion for you, everyone wants what's in and it ain't boosts [I've got a cheap set if anyone wants them ] Just my view right or wrong it's how I see it, if there was "the in look" for VW's there's got to be one for Defenders |

Who decided that black wheels look smart? They can make a dull car very dull!! I'm totally baffled but it just goes to show how style changes, 5 mins ago it was an extra to have coloured coded arches and next it was an extra to have them painted black? Don't think you will ever see her indoors at Windsor pulling up with black sawtooths on a Defender that's for Del Boy and Rodney!!!
