Belgium 2015 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 HT Chawton White
Shaking Defender
Ever since we had our 110 it started to shake once around 100km/h -> 130km/h
Even though it was intermittent I thought it were the wheels that are bad balanced.
So let them balance again, testing, at first ok, but then it started again.
Got them balanced with pvc balls => no avail.

So I put bak the original wheels as the def came from the dealer.

It's much better, but still the shaking / wobbling occurs.

Strange thing is, it's not all the time, and it can start out of the blue and also stop like that. (When driving the same speed)

Anyone had similar?

Thx 28/02 - Loss of a good friend...

Things I would check:
- Are both the driveshafts tight on both end.
- Is there play on the hand brake drum. (I had that recently. The driveshaft was tight but the nut that hold the flange had some play) Roel

I once had a set of wheels and tyres that caused a wobble at certain speeds, no amount of balancing, changing wheel positions, rebalancing and beads would cure it. To all intents and purposes the various components in themselves checked out ok. Steve.

Could be a slightly warped disc?
But if it's intermittent maybe not, just a thought.

Does the shaking get worse on heavy braking? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

no shaking while braking, and only intermittent above 90km/h.

I'll check all nuts and bolts again. 28/02 - Loss of a good friend...

Sounds to me like swivel preload is incorrect.

So if it's not on the original set from the dealer I guess a question to ask is what wheel and tyre combination is giving the problem? Steve.

it is on the original set, only less frequent and less intense.

If it was the swivel preload, wouldn't I feel it more on the steering wheel? I'm pretty sure it's not the front wheels that are vibrating.

Taking it to the garage is an option, but missing the def for some day's is not Wink 28/02 - Loss of a good friend...

You mean the clamps on the steering rod, or tie rod? Sure!
How is the drive with them fixed firmly? Cheers, Vincent

going to test now.
But thinking of it, If that could be the case, wouldn't I had the risk of pointing my front wheels to opposite direction? 28/02 - Loss of a good friend...

After some visits to the dealer, who could not find anything wrong, except blaming it on bad calibrated wheels, I decided to replace the stock suspension with HD suspension.

Guess what: Problem solved.

This is how the front stock spring looked like when still in place:

Sounds like you had a lazy damper then or a worn bush that has either been replaced during the install or tightened up by the change in suspension geometry.

Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
