Fog lamp single filament bulb hence two wires and different diffuse red lens. Stop/ tail light twin filament one for each function hence 3 wires

Given the picture and reading between the lines I assume this is a replacement for the fog lamp.
If this is the case you should use the brake and earth wires for the new lamp. The 3rd wire will be for the tail/running light, it's not bright enough for a fog lamp application. As a side note I fitted a reverse light to the fog lamp position and wired it to suit on mine. Cheers, Kyle. |

You're replacing a single function lamp (fog) with a twin function lamp (stop + tail) so yes there are more wires
LED Single function lamps are available or you can wire just the brake element up on the lamp you have and leave one wire not connected. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Thanks for the replies and I think I get it now.
So if you had to hazard a guess, which two wires would you say connect the tail lamp filament to the factory black & grey wires? |

I think the colour code is moulded into the back of the lamp. And you want the stop element not tail element 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

The LED light units I have seen tend to have the wiring information embossed on the back of the unit.
LEDs are polarity sensitive, in your case you have two positive leads and one negative lead. There are 6 possible way of connecting those wires to a battery only 2 ways will energise the light. One way will be to tail light and one way the brake light. So a case of battery some wire and two croc clips? However would it be simpler to buy the correct unit with the correct connector already fitted? Brendan |
