front diff oil seal
Hi all,
I have to replace a front diff oil seal on Puma 2.4 tdci 2009,someone knows the right pinion bolt torque value ?

From the Puma WSM:-

Installation
1 . Clean pinion oil seal recess and pinion flange.
2 . Lubricate oil seal lip with clean oil.
3 . Using LRT-51-010 fit pinion oil seal.
4 . Fit pinion flange.
5 . Restrain flange using LRT-51-003 and fit bolt. Tighten bolt to 100 Nm (74 lbf.ft).
6 . Position drive shaft to differential housing and align reference marks.
7 . Fit flange bolts and tighten to 48 Nm (35 lbf.ft).
8 . Remove stands and lower vehicle.
9 . Top-up differential oil level.


This is curious since the "Torque Specifications" table at the beginning fo the WSM section says:-

Bevel pinion nut 130 Nm

... even though (a) this conlficts with the section quoted above, and (b) the bevel pinion on all Pumas is retained by a bolt not a nut.

The Puma WSM is riddled with errors, contradictions, and anomalies like this though.


I've always gone with the 100Nm figure.

Isn't there a flange tool required for this or at least fashion something of your own?
Maybe the OP has this but I swear it is needed to tighten it up.

Tis' worth checking the flange isn't worn too wwhile at it or it may still leak even with a new seal.

Yes, LRT-51-003, but it's very easy to make one or to improvise.

Failed for a leak ? Was it particularly bad.
I had an advisory for the rear when I had it but it was a weeping leak and UK MOT.
Is yours different / more stringent then?

Not too bad, axle was wet but not leaving a mark on the ground after parking. I thought he was a bit harsh. I'd imagine it's tougher over there with vosa stopping hgvs and checking them day and night

Thanks for this write up - changed the front seal on my 130 cherry picker today.
I simply put it back on the wheels to tighten up the pinion bolt - no special tool required!
Sadly, the leak has turned out to be a cracked weld on the axle.

Mike, is the crack in the weld holding the end flange to the axle tube and is it 2012 vehicle? If so, read this thread. There was a recall for this on 110 and 130 models, but not 90s.

Thanks for the heads up on this.
It's a 2012 2.2, and I think the recall doesn't include my vin number.
The crack is in the seam along the front of the axle close to the nearside end.

It's a 3.5 tonne cherry picker and has HD suspension, so I'll speak to a dealer.
In the meantime, I stuck some chemical metal over the crack to try and keep the oil in.
