Ok what about this chassis? Personally it looks to me like it's been in the sea?

Thats not too bad, but not great either - have you seen other examples of similar ages. Mike

That looks fairly poor to me....
Our series 3 (1983) is a huge amount better. If it looks like that on the rails then it could be much worse on outrigger, bulkhead, rear crossmember etc. But then again it could be solid and just surface rust. Investigate thoroughly! That is a lot worse than my 03. I looked at a few and the difference is stark between some. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)
2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r |

Just trying to get a handle on what's good or bad, I've not looked at many.
Looks like it needs some work. It's from an older car more like 14years old so maybe it's not so bad. Front looks much better though? Winter's here, thanks goodness! |

I know it's a picture of my exhaust rotten through, but you can make out the chassis behind it

problem is when it gets to a state as bad as that, it'll need work forever and you'll never have confidence in it.
It should definitely be mostly black! And remember it'll be much worse inside than out. Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

I agree its not great, as i said above and it could be worse in other places or not.
Ive seen much worse TD5's on a 2005/2006 plate though. Ive seen much better than some 3yr old ones too - depending on the love invested from the start Mike |

Remember that chassis rust from the inside out. The outside appearance, whilst giving the impression of care, may not be truly indicative of the chassis condition.
A good looking 10 year old chassis might have been launching boats into the sea for the first 9 years of its life then cleaned and waxoyled last year. The waxoyl being thicker than the chassis metal that's left. In that respect the photos tell you nothing, you need to get under it with your hammer and check it thoroughly, that's the only test. I'd trust the rusty chassis first, at least I can see what I'm looking at. Just my tuppence worth Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |
