check the heat shield by the cat? they have been known to come a bit loose and vibrate at certain speeds --

Thx Naks, what is the "cat"? I checked the heat sheild around the turbo charger, feel quite firm still.
Anybody knows at what point the turbo charger starts working? Engine rev wise. Because I found the noise would be constant if I hold the rev @ a fixed point between 1500and the next mark. It is not a random noise, it is there every time the engine gose pass that point . I tried to accelerate faster so the needle wipes across the range quicker, I could hear nothing then. So is there any chance the noise comes from the turbo charger? Going to have a long trip @ Christmas, so need to make sure everything is OK. Thx |

I would imagine it is a piece of trim or shield etc that resonates at certain engine speeds.
I work in vibration for Rolls-Royce, We have had alot of instances where things vibrate at certain frequencies, we have to check these frequencies between the engine vibration through different engine speeds.. the same pricipal applied to any engine, i guess as you're running through a certain range its causing something to resonate, Is it just when you rev stationary or when driving at speed? best thing to do is try and hold the revs at that point and look for the noise, find out roughly where its coming from and put your hand on parts around that area and see if the noise stops. If you have cruise control, that will be the best way to hold/ control the revs while you find the noise. where roughly is the noise coming from? engine bay? behind dash? underneath etc? My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. Very much a hybrid, TD5 Chassis, tub & bulkhead with a 200TDI and LT77 GB Painted in Stornoway Grey 2 years off the road, but getting close to completion now |

The noise comes only while have speed, nothing happens when accelerate stationery, it is from the engine bay area, most likely driver side part. My big boy is due for service anyway, so I will get LR guys to take a look, I could live with the noise if they can't identify any problem. I will have things updated. Thanks again. |

Sounds like there is no cure for this kind of noise, I guess he might get rid of that one and find a later better quieter model |

Hi.
I have the same kind of resonance in my 300Tdi. It seems to appear only in acceleration and at different speed with defferent gear, 35Kh in 3rd, 50kH in 4th (about the same engine rev). I looked for something loose under the car, but find nothing. May be the catalyst or something exhaust related, but if I strike with a rubber mallet nothing seems to vide. Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum |
