2.4 gear change
The gear change on my Puma has never been great, however with the onset of the colder weather it seems to be getting worse.

The shift from 1st to 2nd when cold is very slow and notchy and unless I use plenty of revs in 1st it often crunches into second a bit.

I'm a little puzzled why the box in the Defender is so clunky when Transit shifts are usually as light as a car. I guess the Transit has a lighter drivetrain and dual mass flywheel that the box was designed for.

Thanks for the info on the gear change solutions.

I'll look into those.

I changed the oil in the summer for what was recommended on Millers site, at the time it felt better, however now it's almost back to how it was.

The main reason for changing it was the utterly awful gearchange, however when cold this oil doesn't seem much better.

Interestingly when the LR factory fill was drained after 24K miles there were plenty of streaks of copper coloured material coming out with the oil.

I once played with a gearbox on a car going to be scrapped just seeing how much abuse syncros take and after about 30 seconds of grating they were totally destroyed. So the crunch into second on cold changes doesn't bode well for a long gearbox life.

This and a graunching EGR and a VCV causing stuttering when cold all kind of suggests there may be expense ahead ;o(

Crunching gears are just one of a vast number of things you have to look forward to Jonno. Laughing

I must have been extremely lucky with mine then, because gear change has always been smooth.

Jonno, check the clutch switch maybe, if non-functional it could keep the revs up while de-clutching which can have detrimental effect on gear change.

Ah well,

I recently saw a mates Navara with its chassis broken in two so crunchy gearboxes and dodgy valves are nothing ! Laughing

I said this also in another thread but I have battled with crunching gears from the beginning. Especially 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. I have tried everything short of a box change. Different oils, clutch, the above mentioned spacers and even new syncros. All to no real effect. So if anybody comes up with a solution it would be great to know. At the moment I just live with it and try to change gear really slow and smooth.

It is unusual to have these problems on an MT82 box - usually is it slick and smooth, and far better than (for example) the R380. It does suggest that there is a fault of some kind.

Are you sure that the clutch is disengaging fully?

As far as I can tell the clutch disengages fine. All other gears other than 2nd and 3rd engage smoothly. I have also adjusted the clutch as per workshop manual and the pedal travel is exactly how it's supposed to be, 130cm from the floor (without mats).

Someone on this forum suggested to drive it without the rubber mats, but that didn't make any noticeable improvement either.

I'm certain that the problem is in the synchros, but cant just figure out what's wrong with them. Some people on this forum have also reported the same issue, so I'm thinking its the gearbox design fault. Also LRO's "Puma" buying article wrote that "...early gearboxes had problems as they'd lose synchromesh, but there were recalls...". Tough the dealership in my country were not aware of any such recalls. I mean other than the ones involving the clutch and the spacers. I have driven only one other puma, also an early one, and it crunched really badly. So it cant be an isolated issue.

I might try the Ford friction modifier next oil change, as suggested in this thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39663.html. Although I'm not holding any high hopes for it.

Anyhow, as I said earlier, I have gotten used to it. I don't fancy changing the whole gearbox just to try if that makes the gearshift smoother. If the box fails totally at some point then I can try a new box. Or convert it to auto Wink

I am unaware of any recalls on Puma gearboxes (my 2007 has never been subject to any), but if there were it should be a matter of record and possible to establish.

LR doesn't tend to recall vehicles if it can possibly help it, and is more likely to issue a TSB for action "if the customer complains", but I am similarly unaware of any TSBs about gearbox issues except for the ferrules to be fitted in the gearchange housing bushes (as mentioned earlier in this thread).

I tend to take anything written in LRO (or any of the other 'comics') with a pinch of salt - journalistic 'research' is not what it used to be and is nowadays very google-dependent. There is value in citing primary sources in any writing claiming to be authoritative!

It does however sound as though you probably do have a defective gearbox, which I am sure is frustrating in the extreme for you. In the UK, it is now not difficult to source an MT82 box from a low-mileage scrapper, but I imagine such things are scarce for you.

Hi all!

I have the exact same gear issues as described by Erik256: 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd need to be changed with much patience, otherwise there is a bit of gear noise and resistance felt in the gear lever when engaging the new gear.

Note that I also have a 2007 model (apprx. 30k miles on the clock).
I hoped that a future clutch replacement might mitigate the problem, but Erik256 has already done that and no good. Incredible that even new syncros have not solved the issue as already tried by Erik256, as the feel on the gear lever definitely feels like lazy syncros.

Waiting for someone who has successfully solved the issue...

Regards,
Ter

In my mind the issue with mine does seem like weak syncros, I'm wondering if it is worth trying the very expensive and LR or Ford specific Castrol BOT oil. However it was rubbish with it in to start with so probably not !

The other half has a Focus 1.6 diesel and the gearchange is literally effortless and I was stunned to find it the same in a LWB 2.2 Transit I drove, admittedly the transit had a cable linkage to the gearbox, which I believe was a version of the MT82.
