Where to hookup compressor leads?
Hi,

silly question maybe with an obvious answer to most of you, but not to me: where would I hookup my compressor leads in a quick way?

I don't really want to hook it up to the battery directly (it's under the seat, no Anderson plug or similar, easy connection fitted) so I was hoping to find a good place somewhere in the engine bay or someplace else.

As I'll be using aligator clamps, I was thinking of using the engine-hoisting-eye-thingy, but where to place the other lead?

(I plan to buy the twin cylinder compressor from Paddock's http://www.paddockspares.com/pm982-twin-cy...00gbp.html)

Thanks! Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

^Link doesn't work.....

Many of the compressors come with a cigarette lighter adaptor and you simply plug it in there. It really depends on the current draw of the compressor and if the circuit will cope.
If it's the 30 amp one I suggest you fit an Anderson connector or something similar to your seat box and hard-wire it in with adequate fuse/circuit breaker protection as the simplest one-off solution. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Thanks for the headsup on the link, I fixed it.

As for the amp draw, I have no clue how much it draws. It doesn't say so in the specs. I did some research on which compressor to buy, and this one seems to be a good choice (for the money).

If possible, I would like to avoid fitting something like an anderson plug with a proper fuse. Of course, it can be used for many other purposes (which, in reality, I never run into), but for the occassional use of the compressor alone I feel it is a bit overkill.

So, what would be a good place in the engine bay? Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

There is no amperage details for your link the 'PM982' but the 'PM981' which is a similar compressor has a current draw of 30 amps which the cigarette lighter will not cope with.

Most certainly you will either have to connect directly to the battery or fit an Anderson type connector to use these items. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I have seen cigarette lighter sockets melt long before any fuse has blown. I woudl never plug any compressor into one.

Connect directly to the battery or a properly wired socket of adequate capacity (probably and Anderson, though alternatives exist).

I am overseas right now so I cannot check with my car, but can't I just use the engine lifiting eye and e.g. the starter motor's power connection to hookup the aligator clamps, or is that out of reach? Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000
