Am I the one with bad luck (oilpump)!
Landrover Defender 130 2,2TDCi 2012 MY

110.000 Km (just)
3 year guaranty finished a month ago.

I drove to a pump station, filled the tank, started it again and a sound of startermotor mismatch (mechanical sound over gears).

Engine started and I drove 50 meters.. a couple of hickups a screaming sound like a belt slipping.. and than red oilcan signal came on.. stopped the car immediately.

Pinpointed my dealer to the oilpump failure and general exchange program .
The Netherlands are just starting with calling back the cars and the dearler got his special tool last week in.

Am I now the one with bad luck and oilpump failure?

Checked oil level. It is normal.

I would have thought the warranty would stand for a known endemic fault so long as you have a FSH DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

Bad luck indeed, but I can't imagine they would charge you for it, even if it's out of warranty.
I asked the dealer about the recall and there was no sign of Q421 in the Dutch system.
However, someone else did some research in the UK system so they did the work on my car halfway May.

Although not too worried now, I'll be checking for all recalls before my warranty ends next year.

Not good. Maybe I was lucky - I didn't have any problems with my engine (~15k miles) but the local dealer (Derby) carried out the full oil pump recall (new pump, pickup pipe, sump etc.) FOC 3 months out of warranty. Excellent service btw.

Just looked at Topix on my cars page. Q421 is now on the list (think it came on today as it wasn't last week).

Will be probably guaranty, but it will take a couple of days to repair and I need my car...

I don't know how they will examine the engine, but think they will only change the pump and bits of Q421. Although it was only a small drive, swarf could be in the oil system. Will never be the same again.

Update:

It was indeed the oilpump. Metal particles found in the oil.

Landrover will change the engine FOS.

No engine available will take another week.

3 days are planed for the exchange. Alle parts (turbo manifold etc) have to be build over..

Expect my car back in 2 1/2 weeks time..

No temporary car FOS given.

A result following your bad luck then - I assume FOS is the same as free of charge and it'snto costing you anything.

It's hard to know how the recall VIN range came about, if it was just the range in warranty then it's nice of JLR to do the right thing without makng any fuss.

I think yours may be one of the first Defender engines to have suffered the failure or at least first making it onto the public forums.

normally replace turbo as well

all the transits we see with oil pump problems needed a new turbo after a few weeks after pump failure

As this really is a result of a design fault of the engine and just over three years, I'd have at least expected them to offer you a loan car, just having to pay for the mileage!
You could ask your insurance if they cover that, though.

Update:

I am driving a dealers own Discovery 2 at the moment. There is no progression in the engine swap, as there is no engine available! There were two on the shelf (one in Spain other in UK) but both with the old oil pump. They are now thinking to get one out of line...

in 2 weeks time on holiday.. hope everything is solved by than..

They could have taken the effort to just get one of those two engines including the parts needed for the recall.
Good luck. Hopefully you will be able to start the holiday with your own car!
