Radio Reception
Hi all,
Fitted my Alpine head unit to the defender but FM reception is poor. Is there an alternative aerial that would improve reception, and has anyone else had the same problem?
Cant compair to the origenal head unit as I didnt use it.
Cheers for now..............TC. Thumbs Up Its easy to smile and be happy when the world rolls along like a song.

Hi Tony,
this seems to be a regular problem.... I have had the same issue on all the defenders I've owned!
The issue is not with the arial but with the body.. the arial needs a better earth
I put a bonding cable from the bottom of the arial to an earthing point in the engine bay with good results.. cheap and saves all the hastle of removing the arial & cable etc...
Try this before forking out on a new arial. Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html
Elgar -TDCI(Puma) 110XS Dormobile - now sold

Wyvern, I've got the same problem and keen to take up your advice, can you give me any tips on what type of cable to use, where to connect etc? Bit of a novice at this so any help would be appreciated....Mark "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did..."

Thanks for the followup Wyvern, to be honest not yet! Having investigated under my bonnet due to break cylinder, air conditioning unit gubbins (I think!) can't even get a hand in to the base of the aerial! Wasn't sure how to proceed ....
Any advice? "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did..."

from memory (and sitting out in the middle of the north sea with no landy to hand for referance! ) I seemed to remember that I was able to loosen the arial from the outside of the wing with spanner, then clean up the surface with a bit of emmery paper to make a good connenction.
Then feed some earthing cable through the hole to a sutable earth point on the bulkhead which was a screw fitting that I lossend off and then attaced the cable to,
I then stripped back the other end of the cable and lay it arround the bottom of the arieal mount where it was mounted against the body work and re-tighted finger tight first and tested the radio .. tightenting fully when happy that I had a good connection

Caultion - dont undo the arieal completely as it may drop the bottom off .. (if my memory serves me right Wink !)
So give it a go and see.. it cant be any worse Embarassed !

Just a thought but can't you gain access through the wingtop grill/blank by removing the seven screws and getting in there to the aerial? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Middle of the North sea?! Not ideal landrover territory...

Thanks for the advice tho, going on hols to Cornwall for a couple of weeks (with the landy of course) but will give it a try when I'm back

Thanks again! "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did..."

Ahh - well I'm not as techincal as some of you on here - that takes 2 tools for the job and I can only drop one in the engine bay at a time ! Tee hee!
(your dead right and I'm having a Craft Moment ...!)

Enjoy Cornwall Mark ...it was lovely on Monday when I left home !
Shame I'm out here as we could have met up!!
