By the same simplistic logic, nobody would be killed by joyriders if cars were banned...

Not too sure that is an effective analogy, as we have laws banning nine years old from driving, we have no law in our constitution saying that all nine years olds have the right to keep and drive a car. Nevertheless following this logic if a driving instructor was to allow a nine year old girl under instruction to drive a Maserati MC12 or Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo and in doing so the girl crashed the car killing the said instructor, I would no doubt feel the same. |

It really does shock me that gun laws haven't been tightened in the US! An engine to TDi for!

(although wildly innappropriate) Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Guns are not the problem here, there is one person responsible for this, the gun range instructor.
The parents obviously didn't know any better - but he should have. Anybody with any experience of firearms and an ounce of common sense knows how a machine gun handles under recoil - they are almost impossible to handle on full auto and fly high and wide. An adult would have difficulty controlling it never mind a 9 year old girl. The instructor was a fool - that's it plain and simple and he should have known better. It's people like this that give responsible gun owners a bad name. There is nothing wrong teaching children responsible gun handling and there are appropriate and safe sporting guns to do this with. Assault weapons and especially an UZI on full auto is not the gun to do it with. |

That is part of the problem, "common sense is not so common" - Voltaire, Dictionnaire Philosophique (1764).You may not have criminal intent, but an idiot with a gun can be just as dangerous.IMO, you don't need firearms experience to know that giving a high powered gun to a child is no-no, "common sense" will tell you that. Exactly the gun range instructor was obviously totally brain dead then - as he obviously had experience of firearms AND assault weapons working at a gun range - he just couldn't translate the experience into coming sense

I just wanted to add my bit:
Back in the early 1980s I managed to spend one day at a gun club. I got to use a Colt 45 and found it exiting and strange (having that awesome power in your hand). When the gun ban came, I opposed it (by petition). I now think I was wrong. There is no place for guns - unless you kill stuff to eat it (and even then you don't need to do that, as it's in Sainsburys, you know). The young girl will be affected by that for the rest of her life. She has brain-dead parents, and the instructor was a complete idiot. Just imagine how she feels - what she saw in the seconds after. Imagine what an Uzi does to a soft human head at point blank range. I feel so sorry for her, she may not ever have a normal life. Now, to all those who are purple-faced at the idea of someone coming on here opposing guns, and suggesting that they go to Sainsburys rather than killing their own stuff, just think of this... Imagine, for a second, that guns had not been invented until, say a year ago. Do you believe, in your wildest dreams, that ANY government, ANYWHERE, would allow them to become things that ordinary citizens could use? The idea is absurd. Even if someone had recently invented the gun, it would be a military-only thing, for sure. If I had my way I would ban ALL guns, including shotguns. I've seen a farmer wielding one while staring at me, I've worked for people who had an immediate family member (again, a farmer) kill himself with one. Certainly, the farmers I have had contact with are not the sort of people I would give a gun to! The idea of a small machine, quite capable of killing a human from a distance, being allowed anywhere near an average member of the public scares me - knowing, as I do, the intelligence of the average member of the public. We all have our views, and that's mine. Now left. |

Surely the right to bear arms should exclude automatic weapons, have rifles and pistols if needed, but IMHO if a citizen feels he/she needs to own an assault rifle then they are living in a failed society?

I think we should be able to have guns....
why not? just because we don't need to kill people, we/people should still be able to have guns and shoot them (on ranges/our own land/at vermin etc) if we so wish. Take landrovers/4x4's.... should they be banned because there's no real reason to drive from A to B on a muddy track when there's thousands of miles of perfectly maintained tarmac that also goes from A to B Motorbikes... why should people be able to nip in and out of traffic and accelerate from 0-60 in sub 3 seconds, when the speed limit is 30/50/70 etc.... lets ban them too... Just because some mad people go on rampages with weapons shouldn't mean everyone else gets the shtty end of the stick and loses their fun/interest etc. As said, people kill, not the guns. If someone is driving a car and runs people down, the car didn't do it of its own accord. |

Wheres the like button. If we decided to remove from modern society every item that could possibly be used to kill another human or animal then we'd have nothing to do. And I'd of had to find a real job for the last 24 yrs I was serving Queen and Country. People need to wake up and realise that it's people that kill people not guns, cars, tasers sharp bananas. If I could justify a gun, then I'd buy 1 tomorrow. And yes I would like an assault rifle. Why?? Because I can. I've spent some time in some horrible places in the world and having a rifle on my arm gives me a sense of safety and reassurance. The last 2 summers I have been in Afghan as a civvy (spit) contractor. Being there with no weapon isn't nice. Especially with the insider threat. Thats why we had guardian angels in some circumstances. I would of preferred to have my own weapon rather than rely on someone else to keep me safe 110 D250 SE HT 110 USW SOLD RRE HSE Dynamic Gone, wife killed it VOLVO XC60 R Dynamic with some toys Polaris RZR 900XP SOLD |
