Clutch rattle/chatter?
Hi, experienced this yesterday for first time, after a fairly long motorway (3 hr) drive.

When coasting up to traffic lights or queuing traffic, was getting a pronounced 'chatter' from transmission area.

Only happened when I depressed cluch (i.e coasting), not when in gear, and seemed to be getting worse as I drove - sounded horrible!

Any ideas? Vehicle is 2011 2.4 Puma 90, three months out of warranty Rolling Eyes 1959 Series 2 Ragtop

Mine did it from near enough new, my dealer adjusted it and touch wood it has never come back, I've nearly covered 50k now with just under 3 months warranty left.

Cheers

Mine has started doing exactly this since I replaced the transfer box. At the time I used the handbrake assembly from the new box since the old one was suffering from the usual Puma malaise of being full of oil! The new handbrake is adjusted tighter than the old (3 or 4 clicks as opposed to 6 or so) and I have the intermittent clunk. It is my intention to slacken it to see if that sorts it.

It sounds really serious when it clunks, doesn't it!

Blackwolf, yes sounds bad, like something catastrophic is about to happen!

Does yours only do it when warmed up? Mine seems OK on short journeys, only happens after a long run.... 1959 Series 2 Ragtop

No, in fact if anything mine seems to be more prone to doing it at the start of a journey than when really warm! I don't see what else it could be though.

When mine was doing it, it was always when it had warmed up so assume it was binding and after a journey if I felt the transmission brake drum it was very hot. Also heard it mostly when slowing down at junctions, and when stationery and clunking I found by slightly applying the handbrake the clunking would stop, so knew it was this at fault.

Right, I'll try the handbrake trick next time it happens, see if that stops it, which will help narrow down the cause. Hope this works, and it's not something more serious/clutch/transmission related! 1959 Series 2 Ragtop

You find the problem? I have the same sound and problem, just the same, only when hot after a longer drive and only when coasting in low speed. I also thing it is the handbrake but havent done some thing yet. what is the solution? Relieve the handbrake slightly?
I drive a bit in lower speed and use the handbreak in hope that will help. MY2011 Defender 110

For info, my replacement transfer box and its associated handbrake have done about 8,000 miles since I fitted them in June and, now the rust has been cleaned off the drum and it has all bedded in, this knocking/banging/chattering noise has stopped. The handbrake lever also comes several more 'clicks' towards me when I apply it, and all is good.
