Portugal 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Santorini Black
Thinking of getting a Puma
Hello

I have had a disco3 for the last 3 years but i think it is time to trade it in for a Puma.
Before the disco i had 3 defenders. a tdi and 2 td5s. i loved the 110 td5 i had and only exchanged it because
i had 2 little children.
Now they are a bit bigger and love defenders so yesterday we went to Taunton Land rover and test drove a 2011
puma xs. its got 29000miles and it looks in really good condition!
Should i be worried about the clutch failing or anything else for that matter?
The tax disc is showing 220£? Only? On my old td5 it was 460 or 470...
Has anybody here made the same change? From a disco3 to a puma and if so what are their thoughts?
I am sorry if this has been debated a lot before.

Thank you

Fabio

Hi Fabio

I changed from my V6TDi Touareg to my TD5 double Cab in 2009 to reduce my liabilities, I have loved every minute of Defender ownership, so much so I have just bought a 62 plate Indus Silver XS station wagon with only 4500 miles on, I bought at the end of the month and managed a hefty discount, there are some great deals out there but you need to be aware that there may be VAT to be added to the screen price.

Good luck with you hunt and purchase Thumbs Up

Hi, yes I traded my disco in for a puma last year (2011 XS) - best move I ever made Very Happy . Don't get me wrong, the disco was great, but just didn't have the 'soul' of the defender, which puts a smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel (or just looking at it on the driveway...). If you get one built from October 2010 then the road tax is £220 p.a, before that date then £480-ish Shocked Hope this helps, and have fun looking for your new vehicle! 1959 Series 2 Ragtop

If you get it I suggest you underseal it with something, they're good fun but nowadays rely on their owners to make them last. Smile 2.2 90 XS

Thank you for the replies.
I have done a bit more reading and the pumas seem to be quite reliable... or not? Confused

TJ101

Thank you for the offer.
I am going to trade the disco against the defender if the deal goes ahead...
But i would love to come and have a look at your defender because of the mods you do to them!!
They always look Cool !!

Hi Fabio

I went from a 90TD to a 200Tdi Defender (90) , to a 300Tdi (90) and then a version1 Disco 2, Version 2 Disco 2 then Disco 3 (Dec 2006) and then to the current 110 Utility XS (Dec 2010 - bought ex demo May 2011) . How does the 110 compare?

Reliability - it's seen the dealer for warranty work once (it's there at the moment - I got a three year warranty when purchased). There is no comparison to the Disco3 here - it was lucky if I got six months without something (serious) going wrong.

Comfort - whatever people say the 110 is NOT as Disco 3 in this department. But the XS is not bad - electric Windows, Aircon etc - they all work and all help if, like me, you do 15K miles a year
Noise levels - surprisingly acceptable - I have the Noisekiller set in it and it is about early Disco 2 levels - better than a Disco 1.

Turning circle - you've had one before so you know about the TC - it's not got any better.

The VAT situation was attractive to me - a Disco 4 commercial was out of the question and I wanted the extra seats too - this may or may not apply to you.

Fuel consumption - I get 25mpg whether I'm towing a 1300kg Caravan, a trailer, doing 70+ unladen on the motorway or driving around town - it never changes. The Disco 3 on a good day could top 33mpg, towing it would drop to 22mpg. Put the money you save on the vehicle license towards this!

Smile factor - fantastic!!

Don't get me wrong, a reliable Disco 3 would have been great but it just wasn't.

I never think about the comfort anymore, the 110 is just about perfect for me - another few dergrees of steering and it would be perfect.

The current warranty issue is the dreaded clutch rattle - as it stood on Friday the warranty was paying for it - I'll confirm when I pick it up and have no bill!!

Do the change - you won't regret it!

Hi Fabio

You worn regret it!! You can add nice nice bits to the car to make it more luxurious, I have added some FCX leather bits, the glovebox, grab handle dash top, an extra deep padded cubby lid and a smaller momo steering wheel is about to go on to save my elbow from the door.
In addition I have fitted mud seat rails to the front seats to give a bit more legroom, chucked on some wheel spacers and adjusted the steering stops to save me having to take two cuts at corners in the city centre multi storeys.

The great thing with a Defender is you can personalise it to your own needs.

Thank you for the reply. my disco hasnt been that bad... i have had it 3 years and had an alternator...
But it is very expensive to maintain. It just had a service for 1480£... Big Cry
And i know that the defender wont be as expensive, it will not need tyres every 20000miles or breaks.

Jomara

The fact that i can make it my own and my children absolutely love the defender is another factor.
I drive to Portugal every year(not this one) and do a bit of camping that is what it will be used for.
I dont need it for anything else.
Hoppefully it will also do a bit of offroad because i love it... Very Happy
Again thank you for all the replies!!
These land rover forums are great!!
Full of helpful people!! Bow down

Fabio
