As a starting point take the bulb out and see if the fuse blows then. It'll give you an indication if it lies with the lampholder or the switch. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Before I swapped to a full led setup I kept blowing sidelight fuses, turned out to be corrosion on the positive contact in the lamp holder. Worth a look

I decided to double up my reversing lights last weekend along with the fogs and now they won't work. The fogs are fine but the reversing lights haven't got any power, the fuses are fine and there's power to the fuses. According to the Haynes book of lies on my Td5 fuse 14 is linked to the reverse lights but that also is responsible for the glowplug circuit which allthough lights up the telltale, isn't working. So a bit more investigating to be done, the switch on the back of the gearbox and the glowplug kit. Why oh why did I make that under cubby box and fix everything down, for years the cubby box has just been loose in that central spot and I've never had a reason to get under there, fix it down and hey presto a couple of months later it all has to come out

Do you have tow electrics?
Is there a build up of crud & water in the socket or connector behind the plastic flap? |

I know what you're saying bpman but I for one have a 12N plug so no reverse wire present. With mine everything points to the switch on the back of the gearbox.

Simple terms the fuse rating has been exceeded. Doesn't necessarily mean a short, just a heavier load than rated. You are probably correct in this case! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Well thanks for the tips folks........went out and had a poke about............light fitting and connections look just fine...........tried without the lamp in.........put it in an out of reverse a few times just with the ignition on.........fuse fine.....replaced bulb and did the same...all ok too.............left it in reverse gear and started engine...POP! went the fuse..........as said before electrics are a mystery to me........does this point to the switch being the problem?......or any other ideas?.....any advice welcome.

Try an LED light fixture (in the holder) or a new LED light.
Mine works with an LED fixture ( which is rubbish) but same system as you for a regular bulb. Been like that a long time. I will go for an RDX light sometime though. Seems to me the extra current draw required by a filament bulb causes it, although I didn't get blown fuses it just simply stopped.
Put the LED fixture in and it worked all the time...  $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Lampholder.....If the fuse doesn't rupture with ignition on and bulb out with reverse selected everything is fine as far as the lampholder. Fitting an LED in lieu of a normal filament just disguises the root cause it does not sort it!

What do you think it is then Mal? Poor contact on the holder or possibly similar on the switch side? Always is power there on mine just it doesn't seem to like the filament type bulb.
Is it perhaps done thing to do with the extra resistance of a filament bulb compared to an LED? I even got the dealer to sort this out a few years ago, and they did it worked for a few days and stopped yet again with a filament bulb. Seems to be a common issue with the early Pumas that the revers light like to play funny  .. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Ignition on and reverse selected if you have access to a multimeter check you have a full 12 volt supply at the centre contact of the filament. Then with no power and the ignition off and out of reverse check for resistance between the centre positive contact and earth (there should be open circuit indicated) and negative contact to earth (there should be 0 ohms). Better still do the same check from the positive to earth using an insulation tester and the results would indicate if you have an insulation breakdown between the switch and the holder. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
