What you thinking? Very Happy

in the pic of your fitted plate the inlet manifold looks like it covered in oily dirt ( I maybe wrong can't see that much of it )
to get oily dirt like that normally means there a blow somewhere , manifold gaskets , leaky intercooler hose , gasket on the short metal inlet pipe to manifold

sorry if wrong and giving thing to worry about , but only trying to help

you can get blanks to go either side , I would prefer to blank before egr if poss to keep the crap out of egr

Indeed also the bit in the picture that is hanging out looks to me to be one of the slots that the bolts slide into ?

Steve

yes it is one of the slots for the bolt ,but I think he got the wrong one so fitted it cross ways to still blank it off

you can get the right one on fleabay , look for one to fit mk7 2.4 transit and it goes before egr and cost about £4.50

the noise happens when the blank isn't fitted.

to my mind that confirms a faulty egr valve?
the improvement to my mind is significant (I just don't know if the improvement is equally significant / noticeable with a working egr?)

what I'm struggling to understand though is why my MIL hasn't come on, I thought it was a given that if you completely blank the egr the MIL comes on???

should have done 3 years ago......

.....can't be that much left to sort out now. and going by how its driving now I believe the best is yet to come / almost here / driving as it should.

very tempted to get the right size blank plate and leave it at that but I'm a little perplexed as to why the MIL isn't on and wouldn't want to think that if something major is going wrong I don't have the MIL to warn me (albeit hopefully there would be other tell tales?)

aha that may explain it?

I've done 5 journeys now and reved it up to 4k rpm so I would have expected to see it by now but I'm more than happy to wait a little longer before I put pen to paper and write my final letter to LR Evil or Very Mad

If you unplug the EGR electrical connection do you get MIL light ON? May take 3 starts to show! LANDYWATCH

spoke to my mate today and he has never known a egr problem to cause a knocking noise , and he has worked on hundreds of these engines

perhaps knocking isnt the right word. but for the time being it sounds smoother than it has so I won't be removing it (the blank) anytime soon - especially while there's no MIL......

although it is logging higher than expected MAF readings?

IIRC the TDCi engine management strategy uses the readings from the MAF and MAP sensors to determine whether the gas flow through the EGR is correct, which is why the MIL will generally illuminate if you blank off the EGR.

If you have a blank fitted, the volume of air passing the MAF will be higher than the engine expects since the proportion of intake gas which would usually be coming through the EGR is absent. With a blank fitted, a "higher than expected" fault on the MAF is therefore totally expected.

What is unexpected is that you are not getting more severe faults and MIL. Perhaps you have a faulty MAF sensor which is under-reading.

totally agree.

the only thing I can say is the maf, map and vcv have all been replaced recently so I hope / expect they are all ok?

tried spraying brake cleaner around the egr to see if there was a leak and air was getting into the system at this point but fairly sure its sealed.
