Erratic Idle
Evening All,
Whilst waiting at some lights today I heard a tapping rattling noise, at first I thought it was coming from the car in front of me, though with this the tick over became very erratic, so give it a little rev to see if it would change with this there then was a high pitch rattle noise for a few seconds, then it went away, although the engine note now sounds more noisy, rattly now it still drives fine
This has happened a few times today, I have contacted my dealer about it, just thought I would ask if anybody had any ideas,

Mines had a few issues relating to idle ('hunting [reving up and down], noisy etc) and they were EGR related. As soon as it's out of warranty ill have it remapped and the EGR turned off. Cheers, David

A malfunctioning Volume Control Valve in the fuel pump on the 2.4 TDCi can cause an erratic idle and injector rattle without throwing up any DTCs. Not easy to diagnose, except that most other things will cause DTCs so the absence of a DTC is in itself a clue.

Hi David,

Well that is interesting I have just had the EGR valve replaced with a new unit about a month ago by my dealer, because the old one was squealing like a pig Laughing

Hello Blackwolf,

Not getting the MIL light lit up, so am I correct in saying there will be no DTC events if dealer checks this out? If this is the case I may mention what you have related to me, as my warranty runs out in September and don't want to be left with any nasty surprises if not correctly diagnosed now. Wink

There are many situations which will cause DTCs without turning on the MIL, but the VCV is one of the few areas of the engine management system which isn't very effectively monitored. The result is that a VCV can be quite severely faulty and definitely cause driving faults and yet not cause any DTCs.

Transits also have issues in this area.
