Let's do some forum necromancy on this topic
Was looking into steering guard JATE ring compatibility for some time and bumped into this.
I decided to order a Mantec steering guard for my LR90 last week (Paddocks). Should the JATE rings not have fit, I would have cut slots out of the aluminium plate. It turned out however that Mantec updated the guard: the aluminium plate is a bit shorter on the front, which allows for the JATE rings to be fitted.
Only thing you have to do is buy longer M10 bolts (160mm) as the ones supplied are just 10mm too short.
Besides that you have to cut one of the three shorter metal bushes supplied exactly in two. That way hou can fill the gap between the jate ring and the side plate of the guard. In that space you would normally have to put the entire (uncut) 30mm bush. See attached pictures for explanation.

Furthermore I had some extra bits and pieces in the fitting kit not accounted for in the fitting instructions: two thick M12 washers, one large and one small (lower right parts in the parts picture). I rang Mantec tech support where they explained that I probably had a new kit with an old manual. Now this is how it works: the large hole on the driver's side of the steering guard side panel is used as locator and falls over the existing bolt of the steering arm fixing (see pic). Then on the passenger side you use an M12 bolt with one of the shorter bushes and on top the smaller one of the thick washers to fill the hole in the sideplate. On top of that comes the large thick washer to fix the passenger side sidepanel to the chassis. The rest is pretty straightforward.
Hope this makes sense to everyone.

Good luck installing your steering guards.

Nice.

I eventually got my steering guard fitted, had to have it milled to fit the Jate rings.

I also had problems with assorted spacers and washers. Had to try and source different sized spacers to those supplied with the kit. In the end, made up some gaps with several washers.

Jate rings with a steering guard look really functional to me not a fan of the hole cut in the steering guard blade - pulls are rarely dead straight and having them in double shear seems far more preferable.

Thumbs Up

I thought this was just wider due to chassis rail width of later Defenders?

Yes I thought so too. The steering guard side plates usually mount over the steering arm fixing thing on the drivers side, so there's noting underneath the JATE ring.
I am not sure, but it might be that 110 defenders have wider rear chassis long members. The front long member on my ninety is 85mm wide, the rear one 75mm. Will have to fill that gap with washers. (haven't got any on the rear end yet)

Really excellent advice and pictures from Ninety84 - much appreciated and I have just fitted my Mantec guard and it looks very purposeful along with its Jate rings.

For anyone fitting this set up on a 2.2 tdci with air conditioning, be aware that it is an abrolute swine to access the top bolt on the steering box side. Nevertheless it is possible by carefully unclipping the metal pipework for the refrigerant.
