How many miles is too many?
Hi all
Have been on here before, jumped ship to a D3 and I'm now returning with a seriously damaged bank balance.
I've found a local Defender on an 04 plate, just what I'm after, but has 140k on her. I've had TD5 Defenders and Discos before but never run to this sort of mileage.

I'm just wondering how your TD5s have lasted heading north of 100k

TIA

Mac

Has it been regularly maintained? A 150k vehicle with regular servicing can be better than a 40k vehicle with lack of maintenance for example... An engine to TDi for!

As GUM said. Should be fine, but have a very good look at history, see how often it's been serviced, and what else has been done on it.

140k is not much, they can easily go for another 100k after that. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

My 05 uses no oil at 70K.
The only part replacement has been a new injector harness.

Over 160k on a 2002my 110, just usual bits........injector loom. washers and seals, fuel pressure regulator, odd wheel bearings and a couple of prop UJ's. Mine is used every day for all sorts of things from the school run to 200 mile trips including greenlaning and often is found towing anything and everything. It was serviced before I bought it by the police workshops at Towcester and had regular servicing by me since. It still has the original battery, clutch and has a JE Engineering stage 1 map for the past 4 years.
I don't think mileage has a great factor, more the way it's been looked after.

We got our 110 with 120k on it about 2 1/2 years ago
It's had a few coolant leaks and discs and pads and one headlight switch
And all was going well till this last few months.
The clutch went inc flywheel
And now it's sat dead outside since the rac brought it home last weekend
Best guess is the in tank pump

It's now on 145k but but does not smoke much
Or even leave any oil stains under it

But this next year will prob need a steering box and a new wiper motor
And try and track down why its a little down on power ( maybe related to why it's broken at the moment )

It's just typical that I had to mention the fact that mine is still on its original battery, had an issue this morning when it was lacking. It had done the initial cold start then a short 2 mile trip to see to the pony with the heated screen on so when I jumped in to drive away an hour later the poor old battery wasn't quite man enough to throw it over properly. No problem though, just flick a switch and join the second battery into the start circuit and away we went. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for now but it's inevitable that I'll be getting a new battery in the near future, not bad for 11 years though!

Only concern with high milage Td5's is that the value of them falls dramatically when they pass about 120thou, don't ask how I know Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry . Even though the only real issue is the cylinder head.

Mileage is really quite a poor way to judge a vehicles remaining lifespan you would be better off having a counter on the on the drivers door to tell you how many times it has been opened ! 2005 Td5 90 XS
