Noisy clutch when cold.
Im completely new to this forum so hello fellow land rover owners!
When i reverse off my drive and the 90 is still cold, i get a loud squealing noise from the clutch as i depress the medal to select 1st gear. It soon becomes silent after a few minutes of driving. Any ideas? Something i should keep an eye on? I drive a 1999 td5 90.

Cheers

They all do that sir ! Td5s do this when cold it is the spigot bearing that the gearbox input shaft engages in in the end of the crankshaft, this dries out with age and causes the noise when cold it is not serious but is worth replacing the bearing if and when you need to replace the clutch or remove the gearbox for any other reason.

My Td5 has done this nearly all the time i have had it (3 1/2 yrs) and has got no worse during that time. 2005 Td5 90 XS

A friend of mine has a TD5 Disco which does this, and I haven't been able to decide if it is the clutch release bearing, the spigot bearing in the centre of the flywheel, or the DMF itself. It has however been doing it for the last year-and-a-half and hasn't got any worse.

If you get to the bottom of this noise please do let us know!

EDIT - cross post with Lou Sparts - interesting! There was a batch of TD5s built around 2002 which had defective spigot bushes fitted, they weren't properly oil-impregnated on manufacture (they're made of "Oilite", a porous broze alloy which is supposed to be oil impregnated and subsequently self-lubricating). My own Disco2 was one such, and now you mention it that shrieked when cold. A new bush was fitted under warranty and has been OK for 11 years and 200k miles since.

I think its fair to see that land rovers as a whole do some funny things when cold. Thanks for your help guys. Very friendly forum, will be of great use to me. A warm welcome!

Nothing to worry about, my 2000 TD5 does this as too when the clutch is pressed. Stops after a minute of the engine being on Thumbs Up

I don't think you should restrict it to "when cold" - they tend do funny (peculiar, not comic) things at any time. Temperament is part of their character, and the reason we love 'em so much.

I keep telling myself this when mine randomly refuses to start!
