I have read differing views on forums, so can i ask....Is fitting a decat pipe illegal in the UK ?

No - it's not illegal.

There is no catalytic converter test on a diesel, so it is not a failure to remove it. Spark Ignition (SI)/Petrol engines have different rules - and no CAT is a reason to fail.

In short - Once the vehicle is sold - the owner is free to do what he/she likes as long as it meets the requirements of their country, so in the UK, it has to be able to pass the MOT.

And the only difference for a post 2008 vehicle is the smoke test number is lower.


There are a few more rules and regulations - but these only really apply to the manufacture of said parts, not the end user.

With a decat pipe you should really have the ECU calibration changed to suit - as you may suffer surging/turbo over speed.

To the best of my knowledge they aren't illegal to be de catted on diesels but are on petrols. (Happy to be put right on that if I'm wrong)
Only thing is if they may bring it into new MOT regs but that is a lot of ifs and maybes with that, as of currently a lot of people are running de cat defenders. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

"I do have the BAS map interface unit. Removing the catalytic convertor does NOT affect diesels come MOT time only ignition sparked engines which diesels aren't.

Then as I read through the posts in the links, and googled some other forums, got bamboozled as to wether getting through MOT and being legal were the same thing Wink I think zefender's posts scared me a bit, hence the check/post.

There is a reason for failure listed on our Mot computer (direct linked to vosa) that says if any part of exhaust system is missing this is for petrol or diesel listed under general reasons for failure.. Now as normal that can be read to mean different things to different testers .
No1 If cat is removed and replaced with pipe the cat is still missing but no fumes can escape
No2 does it mean a piece missing causing fumes to escape other than at tailpipe (this is the one I would go with)
This is splitting hairs I know
Speaking to our tester he is not really bothered weather there is one or not as long as there is no fumes escaping and I think that would go for most testers there more worried about safety issues
As everyone knows there is no emission check on diesels only smoke so tester can't tell by that ,unlike petrol no having cat will not pass mot emission test
THERE IS NO DIRECT REASON FOR FAILURE LISTED FOR DIESEL CAT PRESENT OR MISSING and testers have stick to these rules . Weather they change rules in future I don't know they send out notices (updates) all the time to computer for tester to read
Still going to de cat mine when I get round to it

On a petrol engine irrespective of emissions on recent models the catalytic convertor must be present to pass.

Cut and paste from 7.1.....

On petrol engine vehicles that qualify for a full catalyst emissions test, check the presence of the catalytic converter.

Reason For Rejection.

A catalytic converter missing where one was fitted as standard.

just to throw a big spanner in works !!!!
in mot bay today 60 plate transit diesel logged on to computer for mot and chatting to tester ..got him to look in exhaust system reasons for failure and listed was :
cat missing if fitted from standard
still not 100% about this . I did not have time to look further .but will do when not so busy .. may have been because of year etc
only thing they may have changed rules for later regs

I have fitted the Alive tuning decat pipe which has the mounts for the heat shield as standard. The decat looks like it is a catalytic converter, probably why I have had no issues with 2 x MOT's since fitting.

And as I had this fitted it seemed pointless not to get the full SS system and a larger intercooler plus new remap to take advantage of the new mods at the same time.

It does sound nice Steve. At normal engine loads you don't really hear the exhaust note but when you use the extra torque from the remap you do hear a deep rumble from the tail pipe, more so when towing and the engine is under load, its not that boy racer screaming sound you hear from having an oversized exhaust tail can on a corsa, its more of a deep throbbing rumble if that makes sense??
