Click image to enlarge Spotted this today in the same car park in Glasgow . After taking the pics I planted my nose against the drivers window to take a peek inside within seconds a Huge fearsome salivating head of a German shepherd appeared from behind the tinted glass a real brown trouser moment , yes I myself and all I could hear we're passers by laughing out loud. As I jumped 2 feet backwards . No need for a tracker then . There was a camping and travel book around Scotland on the dash . Before I left the driver and his Missus arrived and We had a chat about our travels . He's off to Mull and onto Skye . He tells me that from next year NO defender will be sold in Germany , due to a change in the law about front end impact and pedestrian safety . So although as we all mention that the defender probably has a few more years of production left , it's all over in Germany . Is this correct ? |

Is Germany banning commercial vehicles then? Their economy will be well screwed if so...

Different rules for different classes of vehicles, which obviously reflects their use. Darren

They are both commercials?
Seems kind of daft to make cars crumble around a pedestrian only for a lorry to come along and squash him flat... 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |

I've no idea what they're classed as in Germany but even if they are, you're not seriously suggesting that the same rules should apply to a Land Rover as to a 40-odd tonne articulated truck? 56mph speed limits and tacho's for all journeys, perhaps? In reality, of course, not every Defender is a commercial, regardless of what it might be taxed as.
What would be more of a nonsense would be to apply 'car' rules to SW type Defenders and 'commercial' rules to hard tops. I know it's been like that in the past in this country but the argument that they're both the same shape if they hit you seems to have put paid to it now. Strange timescales though as other discussions and news articles have suggested the end of 2015 as the cut -off rather than next year as mentioned in the OP. Darren

The Defender is a commercial in the same sense as a Transit van is a commercial. The point being that the rules are on the one hand making it harder and harder to produce cars and light commercials, whilst at the time time allowing slab-fronted HGVs to carry on just as they always have done. What is the point making a small vehicle safer (not that there is anything wrong with that) whilst still allowing mobile walls of death to be around. Seems to be somewhat disjointed thinking...
It is clear that FEWER rules apply to HGVs than to Defenders, at least so far as pedestrian safety is concerned. 2011 110 USW 1973 Series III 1-Ton 1972 Series III 1-Ton Cherrypicker 1969 IIA 1-Ton 1966 IIA 88" |

It would be practically impossible to have apply "pedestrian friendly" rules to HGV's. As HGV's are more necessary than Landrovers you can expect HGV to stay the same and Defenders to change,if you wanna go on a crusade,I'd pick another cause .

That in spite of very reasonable arguments for why 4x4s should be exempt from "pedestrian safety" legislation? EG fitment of winches and other accessories. The dreamers in the EU would gladly have all freight travel by train, I highly doubt they have any desire to preserve HGVs. No doubt in the future they will probably start making demands regarding their design. 2011 110 USW
